Re: Don't Bore Us, Get To The Chorus - A Tom Petty Thread
Listening to Wildflowers all the way through yesterday and then again today was actually kind of difficult. All these memories kept flooding in. I mean, I hadn't seen or spoken to this girl since 1998. We weren't close at all anymore. But for a few years in the early/mid-90s she was a great friend and a major influence on my life. I'll never forget when she gave me the album. Kinda crazy how we lose touch and how visceral and real music can be. Memories stick in music. It's nuts. Weird.
Anyway...
I don't know where the dividing line is with pre/post Lynn. But if it was around Full Moon Fever, I'd say thank god they met!
I'm not sure about a definitive top 5 post Lynn... but...
1. Mary Jane's Last Dance
2. You Don't Know How It Feels
3. Wildflowers
4. Have Love Will Travel
5. Runnin' Down a Dream
Something like that. Though, Room at the Top and Saving Grace and Honey Bee and You Wreck Me and Good to be King and Alright for Now and I Won't Back Down are all songs I'd have to consider as well. I don't know. I like a lot of Tom Petty songs. But MJ's Last Dance and You Don't Know How It Feels are my clear 1 and 2.

It can't be underestimated how important the one-two punch of Mary Jane's Last Dance and You Don't Know How It Feels was for his career. A real shot in the arm.
Not that he was at a nadir or anything but to put out arguably your two best songs 18 years in is fucking amazing.

"Listen to Her Heart" is a perfect pop song. Right up there with some of the early Beatles output.

Accused of Love is poppy as fuck. I goddamn love it. That shit'll get jammed right in your brain for days. And what a fucking killer opening line. Most of the lyrics are a little... I don't know, off to me. I don't hate them or anything. But they just feel like a bad first draft. But that opening phrase "You speak to me in natural harmony like we both grew up with nothing" is fucking great.
Catchy song. Yeah, it's toe tappin'.
