Pretty boring, meandering plodding songs. Like Cropduster or Ghost...latter day PJ songs that are impressive from a technical point of view but don't really go anywhere.

Cold Confession is the jazziest this band has ever gone.

what ever you want to call it, its exciting stuff to hear from them, and while i wish they would do more, if we at least get this kinda stuff from the past then ill be happy.

has anyone thought that these could be ready for when they eventually get to the avocado rerelease? instead of a lost dogs 2 they will just unload all that stuff to make a rerelease of an album that was just 2 albums ago exciting

Really? You're happy for a band still in existence to just release crap as long as they open the vault occasionally? My feeling is that whatever gold is in the vault, this band is doing its very best to shit all over my experience of them, and a few old songs won't make me feel better about it.

If a constant stream of quality material (1-2 every 6 months) like this were released,new or old, I'd be very happy.

I dunno. Good songs or not, I don't think I could stay on board this moving train if the best thing about them was old b-sides. I go off bands if I stop liking their material. That hasn't happened with PJ, but only because I've had nothing new thrown at me that was better. I didn't think we had the option of wanting more. Now we have, I can't help thinking they must just be stupid idiots now.

Okay, for the let it ride fans--what really moves you about that song?

It's got that muscularly expansive riff that creates a perfect space for Matt's fills and Jeff's low-end. The choruses feel like natural payoffs from the verses, and Mike isn't really doing anything more than providing sonic dimension. The melody is angular and disjointed, a stark contrast from the cutesy staccato melodies that characterize S/T, Backspacer, and the new LB songs. The bridge is muscular and propulsive without being overly contrived. Coming out of the bridge, the melody streamlines and becomes more vital and urgent, as does the music. The coda reminds me of the best of PJ's codas (Present Tense, Immortality, RVM, Insignificance) in that all five pieces come together to create a cohesive, viscerally emotive piece of music that is much more than the sum of its parts.

Above all, this one just feels so organic. Like five guys who care more about the songwriting and creative process than any commercial or stylistic outcomes.

Listen, the straightforward answer to why these tracks were never album cuts is that at some point in the past 10 years, PJ determined that their best way to continue to make real money was to focus on its live shows. Track selection for albums have been directly influenced by their ability to play these songs live, their ability to get crowd reaction and the method by which certain tracks would fit in a given setlist, relative to their existing catalog.

The short 2:30 minute punkish/rocking songs would fit early in the set (MYM/Got Some), the mid-tempo straight ahead rock numbers in the post Even Flow period (Force of Nature, Unthought), and the slower lovey songs work in the encores(Just Breathe).

The sad part is that I believe that the majority of its fanbase would prefer the band to test us, to throw stuff at us that is challenging, particularly on its albums. We want PJ to be great, to be considered trailblazers. Unfortunately, PJ has relied on the "play it safe" strategy for too long. I believe the exclusion of at track like Cold Concession and the release of a single like Mind Your Manners are both clear examples of this.

These songs are never gonna be all-time favorites or anything close to that BUT it's a no-brainer they're the best things I've heard from this band since 2004. Songs with actual 'fuck yeah' moments rather than 'hmm I don't hate it I guess that's a good thing'
