I'm English, have seen them 3 times, and would say I've been a 'hardcore fan'. I reject the idea that 'hardcore fan' means you've seen them seventy times on tour. I've loved their music and now think it's shit more often than not. If they are trying to reach me, they are more or less failing. And releasing these vault tracks did not help.

i didnt get to see them live until 2000, and im gonna say that before 2000 i was more hardcore then i am right now
seeing shows and a lot of shows is a hardcore thing to do, but sometimes that isnt a possibility, i feel real lucky to have been able to see them as much as i have, but with out the live shows i would still love their music with a passion, and thats what it takes to be a hard core fan IMO

Plus they were a damn hard band to see in the early days, one of their shows in Miami sold out in like 5 minutes in 93 or 94, then they went away from ticketmaster and things like that, as much as i would have loved to see them in the early days, there is no shame in missing out imo

I tried so hard to see them at Golden Gate Park, but you could only get tickets by calling into some small ticket outlet office... In fact it might have been the GGP ticket office... Yeah, that'd didn't go too well. It was rediculous. I still get twitches to this day anytime I hear a busy tone.

You'd have to ask them but do you really think the best art is made with the sole intention of soliciting yeah yeah yeahs from the audience?

I know I keep bringing up Neil, and maybe its unfair, but artists like him, dylan etc... Do not make art for the sake of pleasing a fan base. They make their art for themselves and if lucky - fans will grab onto it. If not? They dont give a shit and they keep soldiering on their own path.

Any artist worth their salt wants their music heard. They want a reaction, no matter how divisive. I respect that some people dont dig the recent stuff, but I'd be really bummed if it was NOT getting some divisive reactions. To me it would be an artistic failure if it wasn't sparking any kind of reaction at all. That's sort of where I'm going at with my previous comments, even if I couldn't articulate them completely. They may not be reaching Joe Blow pop fan, but they are getting traction with a certain kind of music fan that likes PJ but at a certain distance. This is a better artistic life than just a bunch of completely satiated fans. The early years did that (as part of the grunge movement, which made all kinds of waves back in the day) and the middle period (No Code through Riot Act a huge contingent of fans hated, don't we remember this?). If it just neatly settled in without ruffling any feathers at all with 100% of the fans happy I think that's a lesser artistic result than a 50/50 split. I prefer the 50/50 split. Every artist wants to be heard. Anyone that says anything else is talking out of their ass.

Same here. And, unfortunately, I agree that's the direction Ed seems to be the most influenced by recently. Songs like Gone, Unemployable, and Unthought Known (the bridge), just scream Bruce to me. I haven't heard Future Days yet, but I'm guessing there's some in there too.

Any artist worth a shit writes music with the most honesty, integrity, craft, care and hopes that someone will listen. Peddling a bunch of stuff that you hope will get someone to buy a ticket is shallow.

Every PJ song since the year dot has been divisive. Your argument holds no water. Cold Concession and Let It Ride would've had a divisive response among fans. But they would've been great songs, not shit ones. It just looks like you're trying to justify being glad that it's gone your way rather than ours. Which is fine, you don't even need to justify it, so why are you trying? You don't need to make up stuff about art being divisive and that's why they're releasing X kind of song rather than Y kind of song. PJ has always been a divisive band. Not everyone loved Ten, Versus, Vitalogy, No Code, Yield, Binaural or Riot Act. This colossal change of style and approach in recent years just cannot be explained by anything you're saying here.
