executed anyhow wrote:It's weird, but I've had trouble listening to Koz since watching the On Tour DVD. The musical performances in the film were all quite good, but the man is a complete tool. There is even more "Wahhhh, touring is so hard, why do I have to do it" whining than in Radiohead's 'Meeting People Is Easy', and he totally disses parts of his fanbase ("guys without girlfriends", or something stupid like that).

95% of the time, I'm able to seperate the recorded music and the artist as a person, but his stage banter was just so incredibly douchey. It's colored my perception of his recent (post-April) stuff to the point where I can't work up the motivation to listen to it.

The RHP records all kick ass, though. Ocean Beach is untouchable.
Yeah, I saw Red House Painters in '01 and while onstage, Mark basically said "I just woke up and this is the last place I want to be right now". He then went on to say that he wished he was back in bed with some groupie he screwed the night before. I'm not kidding.

I then met him in '06 after a solo show he did and he was nonchalantly condescending to me. Oh well.

"A crack head was hassling me outside of the studio and I put a mic up and sang about it. I didn't have a chorus, so I started rattling names of guitarists, trying to get my part over with. I'd ask the guys 'What rhymes with Johhny Marr?' and one of them would say 'Jay Farrar'. It just went like that until the punchline somehow ended up falling on Nels Cline. I don't hate the guy. It was just funny, so we kept it."

as good as Benji is... i still don't think it touches April or Ghosts of the Great Highway at all. it doesn't have the lush instrumentation or haunting melodies for one.

for what it is, a stream of consciousness account of numerous deaths, it's pretty damn great, but i don't think it has a ton of replay value for me personally as a result. i've already sorta started tiring of it after it arrived this past weekend...

but i'm glad it's better than the last 2-3 SKM records.

I don't see it being better than Admiral Fell Promises, so it can only be better than Among The Leaves, which doesn't mean anything because that one was bad.

i didn't love Admiral Fell all that much... it had it's moments, but was generally just very monotone and all the guitar parts started to sound the same by the end.

i'd love for another lush/full band/electric record again soon, but alas...

I don't exactly love Benji. The lyrics are great, but I have to admit that some of the songs wear out their welcome and meander too much. I like the conversational style he does, but I'd also like to see some tighter arrangements.
