Not many people really claim to love most of this new stuff. There is plenty to like but I don't know how much more I can take Pearl Jovi. Especially with shit like this coming out reminding me of what they were.

These were released by accident, and our favourite band's fan club is clamping down on them and taking them off the Internet for fear that their presence in the world will hurt sales of Lightning Bolt. Lightning Bolt contains a song which is good (released after a pointless week-long countdown), another which is embarrassing but endearing if you close your eyes and push (LB), and a pretty cute but ultimately forgettable little acoustic piece of romantic schlock. This is what they deliberately decide to release to their 'fans', instead of their truly interesting material which they still write, but they discard.

Now remind me, what is there to 'love'?

A lot of people hate on Riot Act, but I'm not sure any of it holds water since it's pretty much being considered the last "true" PJ record (prior to 06). At the time of release I was 24 and in the working world, so perhaps I was aware it was going to be a moody record because of a combination of these sad (for the band) things:

1. Bush elected
2. 9/11
3. War 1 already started, War 2 runup was under way
4. Ed's divorce
5. Roskilde
6. Birdman Sessions

There's a lot packed into RA and I'm fairly certain every single song was written after Roskilde (except for maybe Matt's stuff). Sure, "Down" and "Undone" were the happiest/best songs from the sessions, but were left off because they didn't fit the mood (probably the same reason Cold Concession & Let it Ride were left off Avocado/BS).

Not sure why I'm writing this, simply wish people would consider the situation an album was created in.

These two accidentally released songs, which are outstanding. Why can't Cold Confession and Let It Ride stand alone as enjoyable pieces of music? Why do they have to serve to further diminish the music that you already don't like? A lot of people have been talking about the artistic value of music.

They've released a song that you like, but you have to add the caveat that you don't like the way it was released. You're also making the assumption that the demos are being removed because they could hurt sales of Lightning Bolt, when it would be just as fair to suggest that they're meant to be included on a Lost Dogs type album, in which case their removal would be perfectly justified.

It's perfectly obvious why these songs I like might perpetuate the negative reaction I already had to the stuff I already didn't like because PJ have gone so far downhill. Perfectly obvious. It needs no further explanation and I'd put it to you that you are being needlessly pedantic because you enjoy playing the positive apologist. You know what I mean. Nothing I am saying is a stretch. I was stupidly disappointed and annoyed at the first countdown clock that the news for a tour I couldn't attend because I lived in another country, and that I needed to wait for another week to hear anything else about the album, an album which was almost immediately shown to be lacking in inspiration. You're acting like I'm pulling reasons to be negative out of the air when I'm actually going to great pains to explain them to you. Interpret them as you will but they're as plain as day.

P.S. My speculations about why they're removing tracks from the Internet are no less of a stretch than yours, and there's no reason to jump to the positive conclusion. Well done that you have, but there's no evidence either way. If anything, it's very likely that this is just yet another example of the 10C being absolutely tight and obsessively militant about what they give out.
