IDK the bridge of this song does nothing to me, it goes on forever and to me its not interesting. The peak of this song is that I like the verses so it peaks at the first verse for me.
Id kill for this song to have something liek Daughter, where after the bridge we're hearing something different
mikejasond wrote:Light Years is probably one of their worst laid out songs in my opinion. THAT is the one that is verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, chorus, and there's little else interesting about it UNLIKE daughter which is not as simple as you guys make it sound. It needs to be about half as long as it actually is
mikejasond wrote:i would compare it to the GRRM books, A Song of Ice and Fire.
The first albums are the first books of the series. Just an amazingly laid out and told story. Straight to the point, expert pacing.
Then the middle albums are feast for crows, and dance with dragons. Bloated, 'esoteric', rambling. So many songs on Binaural are twice as long as they need to be. Light Years and Nothing as it Seems the chief offenders, which get 5+ minutes out of barely any content. I dont feel the runtime of either song is earned.
Yes I can do that for literally every song in the catalog however if you do that you're missing a lot of complexity, whereas when I say Light Years is verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, chorus, chorus...that's literally all there is to it. There's nothing interesting beyond that.
Whereas in the daughter example those choruses are very different from one another and even the verse has two distinct entities inside of it, and the outro is playing off of musical themes used completely differently earlier in the song, and the outro actually adds 'new content' to the song
I will also say that in almost EVERY SINGLE EXAMPLE
If you compare a song from Vs. to a song from Binaural or Riot Act, that song from Vs. will have more new ideas inside of it than the others.
Even songs that aren't all that well loved like Glorified G and Rats are amazing. I mean I listen to Glorified G and Im like yeah this is a well laid out song. Even elderly woman! The build in that song is great.
Daughter just stands out even more. But the majority of the Vs. songs are better laid-out songs than the majority of the middle album songs
mikejasond wrote:Seriously if you just listen to the first 30 seconds of Daughter you haven't heard the half of it. You have to listen to the whole thing.
its incredible how many songs on Binaural you don't have to go beyond the beginning. Some of them PEAK in the first 30 seconds (Grievance).
This is so ridiculous. Grievance's outro is quite different from the rest of the song, and it's almost a minute long.
This 25 seconds of Evacuation is better than all of Daughter.
