Also, this thread is maddening to read through. It's like everyone is just talking to a brick wall.PHATJ wrote:Dude, you live in bizarro world. Reality is that YOU think daughter is amazing because it is SIMPLE done WELL. Not the other way around.mikejasond wrote:
The fact you guys think its so simple is just because it does what it does so dang WELL
And like someone said before, I think it is the actual recording of the song that you are really most impressed with, you just don't realize it yet.

It's not just the recording, though; the things he's talking about are clearly related to the performance and arrangement of the song. There's a sense of space and dynamics missing from much of their later work.

Re: Song of the Moment: Daughter
I'd actually agree that Daughter is deceptively complex in its' structure; it may be the most interesting way they crafted a piece of music on those first records, though other songs probably jump out to me more. I'm just surprised mike is latching onto the most conventional part of that song (we're going to start with an acoustic, then vocals, THEN DRUMS, then we'll pick it up for the chorus!) I also think the notion that this sort of songwriting inventiveness (although it may show up in other fashions) doesn't show up on the middle records is wrong.
But yeah, I'd say while I don't really agree mikejasond is correct in the least, Daughter is a more inventive song than it's often given credit for. He brought up Better Man for example; I love that song, it's a hell of a pop song, but Daughter takes quite a few more unexpected twists and turns, even if it doesn't draw attention to itself.

Re: Song of the Moment: Daughter
There is just so much uniqueness in daughter you guys are overlooking.
Yes gradually adding instruments is standard. I still maintain it is done especially interestingly in daughter. even saying they 'just added instruments' is underselling it. The timing of it is unique and the effect is wonderful
And you're underselling the rest of the song too which is not standard in its structure in the WAY it's done. For example yes it goes to a chorus after the solo but the way it seamlessly transitions into a stripped down chorus without losing any momentum is not at all standard or obvious.
What I'm saying is they do it so flawlessly it sounds simple but it's actually very interesting. Just like the progression of the band under the song which falls very interestingly OUT of the standard structure

the bridge in evacuation is helped immensely by the fact that the song surrounding it isn't very good. Like how I would look tall standing next to peter dinklage.Strat wrote:Or the bridges in evacuation

you guys don't deserve mikejasondmikejasond wrote:i would compare it to the GRRM books, A Song of Ice and Fire.
The first albums are the first books of the series. Just an amazingly laid out and told story. Straight to the point, expert pacing.
Then the middle albums are feast for crows, and dance with dragons. Bloated, 'esoteric', rambling. So many songs on Binaural are twice as long as they need to be. Light Years and Nothing as it Seems the chief offenders, which get 5+ minutes out of barely any content. I dont feel the runtime of either song is earned.
