Damn, this record is flooring me. I enjoyed Lost in a Dream but the new one is utterly terrific.
I just bought tickets for the second night in Manchester and I can't wait!

Re: War on Drugs
This album blows away Lost In The Dream and that was probably my favorite album of 2014.

I wasn't big on "Lost in the Dream," but really like this one.
"Strangest Thing" is a candidate for song of the year.

Re: War on Drugs
This album is excellent but I still put it a notch or two below "Lost in the Dream" -- a lot of the same devices and aesthetics are at play, but it's much tidier sonically and features a much clearer separation of instruments and voice, which sucks some of the mystery out of it for me. "Lost in the Dream" was like this swirling tidepool of reverb-soaked emotion, with Granduciel's voice rising up from rather than sitting on top of the music. I'm still unraveling this one, though, and already think it has at least one track ("Thinking of a Place") that is superior to anything else they've done -- it may dethrone its predecessor yet...

Re: War on Drugs
I agree with this 100%. Lost in a Dream was a ski album a few seasons back, though. I've yet to put this new one to the 'ski litmus test' ...Strat wrote:I shall bookmark this post.Kevin Davis wrote:This album is excellent but I still put it a notch or two below "Lost in the Dream" -- a lot of the same devices and aesthetics are at play, but it's much tidier sonically and features a much clearer separation of instruments and voice, which sucks some of the mystery out of it for me. Regardless, it's still pure greatness and I can't wait to see them next month!

Re: War on Drugs
The clean separation of instruments and voice is what I love the most about the new album. It's so crisp (yet not over-produced) and all fits together perfectly and it makes Lost In The Dream seem a little muddy in hindsight. I'm splitting hairs here though - both albums are excellent.Kevin Davis wrote:This album is excellent but I still put it a notch or two below "Lost in the Dream" -- a lot of the same devices and aesthetics are at play, but it's much tidier sonically and features a much clearer separation of instruments and voice, which sucks some of the mystery out of it for me. This one is growing on me much like Lost in a Dream did. I think it is a wonderful complement to the prior. This does feel more grand and ambitious though, pushing what they touched on just a little further

Guys I've tried listening to this band a few times but nothing sticks. Gimme five songs that will change my mind.
I'm trying real hard to be the shepherd.
