That's not to mean you have to like everything they put out. I certainly don't. But each album has enough on them that I see no reason to stop the support. I'm in the like Backspacer camp, so I guess it puts me in the minority around here an may also be why I don't share a lot of the critical opinion being bandied about. But wow. Kind of mystified at the whole thing.

I take nothing they put out seriously enough that it affects my being. I take each album as they come and pull out the pieces I enjoy and set aside the ones I don't. Every once in awhile, I give those songs another spin to see if I've changed my mind and once in awhile I have. If so..they go into my pile that I enjoy. Rinse/Repeat. I don't sit around for a nanosecond wondering why Eddie is forcing the band to play all these horrendous songs. Ha. Its silly to even write it let alone believe it. Any second on here trying to perceive what goes on within the privacy of the band is wasted.

Anyway. My two cents. I get the discussion and the dissection of all that is Pearl Jam, but I don't get the hostility.
"true fans"

Look, his point is that even here, in a bunch of threads that are pretty near unanimously celebrating two songs, they are frequently offset by 'man, this is really great, why do they have to write such shit' tags.
Yeah, and apparently having something bad to say about the band's output makes you a false fan. And in a way, he's probably right.
I was only responding to his last line about the hostility. And lets not be too precious here. You also know the difference between good faith criticism and the heady mixture of schadenfreude, despair, self-pity and repetition that can characterize this place.

I think that's at the heart of it all.

On the other hand I'd take Cold Concession over every slow song since Immortality.

Nah. I probably used 'true fans' liberally there. My opinion was more as STIP indicated it was but unfortunately I don't think it relayed well in what I wrote.

Its just that the things that I legitimately think suck, based on personal opinion, I have put in the past. I like enough of what has been created in recent times to continue on enjoying the bands.

Realistically, I wasn't talking about whether or not one likes a song or not, its more about the fact that some...seem to not enjiy the band at all and dwell on that.

Carry on.

so fucking what?
that's the negativity he is talking about, and many people find it off putting.

That's it.
Sward, someone should have warned you. You can't post a negative comment about the negativity on this forum or else you're own "whining about the whiners" will be shoved right back down your throat. I know from personal experience. I've tried to make a similar comment a few times and I always get shunned like I have broken some unspoken rule.

You're being entirely too level-headed for a place like this, lol. You're exactly right. People get to this ridiculous "I'm breaking up with you" point and I attribute it to centering ones life around the band, or atleast a sizable chunk of it. I'd get scoffed at for suggesting that, but posting hours and hours on end valdiates that people do revolve their lives around the band, even if indirectly.

You're assertion is the way I like to obsorb music.

honestly I'm not talking about specific examples- I was responding to the implication that in order to be a true fan one must turn off all creative filters and take everything as "the best fucking music in the entire universe!!!"

I think it's more the opposite, if someone follows the music/career of this band (or any band) they become more refined in their musical tastes, and want the band they loved with such abandon initially to continue to mature and expand as well so they can continue to love the music with that same abandon.

But I wasn't replying to the hostility bit, only the "true fans" thing. The "people are too critical here" therefore "there is so few true fans left here" thing.

I'm as guilty of this as the next person, but it sure is nice if we could just post about how great (or not) the new songs are for, lets say, a day or two, without turning it into a 'this is what I think sucks about the band right now' or 'now I no longer care about lightning bolt.' It's a subtle difference in tone, but it's what newcomers often comment on (or the people who lurk and don't post).

Neither here nor there as it is the internet and this is often what message boards are all about, but I find it hard to fathom that there are so few true fans left on here.

But I wasn't replying to the hostility bit, only the "true fans" thing. The "people are too critical here" therefore "there is so few true fans left here" thing.

oh, okay. Withdrawn, then. I wasn't ever even addressing the true fans thing.
