On an optimistic note...It's a great time to be a PJ fan!
I was worried about the 82 day countdown seaming like a long time, but new stuff is happening every day.

It also helps when everyone in the office is away on summer vacation and I'm left alone to slack off.

those are the two new songs? Could you post, say unemployable and Parachutes for comparison--a mid tempo and slower song?

Hahahaha.

Mine looks like Ed or Jeff scrawls...no one else get that image? I've never seen it before in my life.
it seems to be fashion related, a reverse image search points to http://www.polyvore.com/made_fashion_we ... d=78360768

the image is no longer on the page but they apparently have several fashion items with a "no tomorrow" name

probably totally meaningless then

I can't believe I didn't check RM before I went to bed last night. Possibly for the best, though.

It would have been nice to have a little more time with the songs before writing the TSIS post.

This bunch have turned my whole head around about ST.
You can hear all this melody and space and guitar work and drums parts, that aren't even there on the album.
And all that horrible compression isn't there. These sound warm and wonderful.

All the compression comes from the mastering doesn't it?
Individual instruments receive compression prior to whole track mastering (think about how much greater the volume spikes would be from, say, a snare hit, if this wasn't the case), but the vast majority of the the type of compression that drives sound geeks crazy is during mastering.

I don't currently have the s/t album (yeah, I said it. I'd say it again if I had to), but here's the shot of Mind your Manners I posted a few weeks back. Keep in mind that Manners is noticeably less compressed than s/t tracks were....some of those were virtually just a big smear of blue.

Image

Getting unmastered versions of modern songs is just about the only way you can hope to hear the kind of sonic dynamics that was the norm in the 60's and 70's.

Could anybody fill me in on why this is? Why the mastering which reduces the dynamics?

Compression basically amplifies quieter sounds to bring everything up to the same level . Yes?

It did exactly the opposite on ST. the demos are all far more detailed than the album versions.

Historically, the mastering process was all about taking a bunch of songs that had been cut on separate rolls of tape and preparing a finished album that could be sent for lacquer cutting. This might involve any number of events...making sure the album's volume was consistent from song to song, cleaning up any potential errors, splicing two takes together on a rare occasion to remove mistakes or recording artifacts, and working with the artist or producer to finalize a sequence and sonic style. Occasionally, you might find yourself adding additional reverb or changing levels to bring a part to the front or otherwise...if you are going as far back as the 60's, mastering engineers had a lot of freedom to help sculpt the final sound of a record.

In the age of protools and pop industry, mastering has largely become the act of maximizing the commercial viability of your recording. Getting the volume to a competitive level...no small task, these days...employing stereo wideners or cutting down prominent frequencies. This last act in particular allows you to boost volume without introducing a lot of distortion or audible clipping...but it also changes the sonic nature of the total recording, by gutting some of the most influential tones and sounds in the previously-created mix. Guitar tones are damaged, vocals begin to sound brittle or tin canned, drums become muddy, and any number of weird ass shit can happen to the bass.

But thank god you got it loud enough, I guess.
