On the evening of April 11, 2016, two weeks after Donald Trump hired the political consultant Paul Manafort to lead his campaign’s efforts to wrangle Republican delegates, Manafort emailed his old lieutenant Konstantin Kilimnik, who had worked for him for a decade in the Ukrainian capital, Kiev.

“I assume you have shown our friends my media coverage, right?” Manafort wrote.

“Absolutely,” Kilimnik responded a few hours later from Kiev. “Every article.”

“How do we use to get whole,” Manafort asks. “Has OVD operation seen?”

According to a source close to Manafort, the initials “OVD” refer to Oleg Vladimirovich Deripaska, a Russian oligarch and one of Russia’s richest men. The source also confirmed that one of the individuals repeatedly mentioned in the email exchange as an intermediary to Deripaska is an aide to the oligarch.

The emails were provided to The Atlantic on condition of anonymity. They are part of a trove of documents turned over by lawyers for Trump’s presidential campaign to investigators looking into the Kremlin’s interference in the 2016 election. A source close to Manafort confirmed their authenticity. Excerpts from these emails were first reported by The Washington Post, but the full text of these exchanges, provided to The Atlantic, shows that Manafort attempted to leverage his leadership role in the Trump campaign to curry favor with a Russian oligarch close to the Russian president, Vladimir Putin. Manafort was deeply in debt, and did not earn a salary from the Trump campaign.

Backspacer (which I enjoy) and LB (which is awful) both come across as midlife crises...flailings by a band who thought they had made a record in 06 that was great in exactly the ways that people wanted them to be great...and found mostly indifference. They are albums that suggest a bafflement as to what their audience wants them to be. "What about this do you like this," volumes 1 and 2.

Sad, because I now believe that ST could have been a much better received album.

Of all the things I dislike about the Trump presidency — and it’s a long list — his calculated strategy to make us all hate each other more than we already do is perhaps the most unforgivable. It should go without saying, but I’ll say it anyway: Of course President Trump didn’t somehow “cause” the Las Vegas shooting to happen, and he isn’t responsible for this massacre. But he feeds off our hatred for our fellow citizens and stokes it up, because he believes — possibly correctly — that it is to his political advantage to do so, whatever costs it may impose on our social and political discourse and institutions.

The National Football League/national-anthem controversy was the latest dispiriting example. He found an applause line to fire up his base of supporters — wouldn’t it be great if the owners fired those SOBs?! Yeah! — thereby converting what had been a minor issue at the fringe of public consciousness into a major national confrontation playing itself out in dozens of stadiums and on television every weekend. There was absolutely no reason for him to say anything at all about it; the issue was out there, and people were figuring out, in conversations around countless dinner tables and televisions and water coolers, what they thought about the protests. But Trump jumps in, because he gets such a great roar from the crowd, and now it’s Them vs. Us, a major national struggle in which we all have to take sides and in which everyone is either an unpatriotic jerk or a racist neo-Nazi.

I look forward to the day when we once again have a president who actually believes it is part of his or her job to help us get over our divisions, not to insert hot pokers into the wounds from existing divisions. Self-government is pretty much impossible if we all think that those with different views on difficult questions are all SOBs.

Vice President Mike Pence’s chief of staff railed against congressional leaders in closed-door remarks to wealthy donors and called for a “purge” if GOP lawmakers don’t quickly rally behind President Donald Trump’s agenda.

In remarks at a Republican National Committee event at the St. Regis Hotel in Washington on Tuesday morning, Nick Ayers also warned that Republicans are “on track to get shellacked” in next year’s midterm elections if GOP lawmakers don’t pass Trump’s legislative priorities.

But Ayers reserved his harshest criticism for congressional leaders and members who have not offered full-throated support for the president.

“Just imagine the possibilities of what can happen if our entire party unifies behind him? If — and this sounds crass — we can purge the handful of people who continue to work to defeat him,” Ayers said, according to an audio recording of the remarks obtained by POLITICO.
