It got bigger overall, because some of the other formats started giving it more daytime plays. But Alternative radio, which is a biggie and typically the band's bread and butter, either started pushing it towards the overnight hours or had a few stations drop it. It went from 4.2 million people there to 3.4.

ahh, okay. that's a pretty fast drop for a song that had a good opening week, isn't it?

Depends. If it's just a matter of moving it to the evening hours, that seems reasonable. For the first week, it's a big "hey, look what's new!" moment, and you toss it on during high traffic hours. After that, you shift it towards the evening and overnight...where it either proves itself or passes away.

If stations are dropping it already...that's something else. But it's still gaining at Active Rock...a format that Pearl Jam singles have historically not been "heavy enough" to achieve big numbers at.

As a weird aside, I heard "Of the Girl" on our local "progressive" radio station last night.

Radio play still tends to correlate really well with other indicators of success. For example, Just Breathe and the Fixer were both strong at radio. They were also the most purchased post-2000 songs at iTunes, two of the only non-Ten tracks to stick around in the band's most listened to songs at last.fm, and the most searched for at YouTube.

I think that, as streaming digital audio options become more and more popular, radio will get diminished. For now, though, its audience size hasn't been affected by digital the way something like album sales have.
