Me too. I've had a lot of bitterness towards this band and haven't really been able to explain it other than well, IT ALL SUCKS. LOOK AT IT. Truth is, though, I just tried too hard to really like an album that was always mediocre and I became pretty butthurt when I realised I'd wasted my time. I'm honest about what I enjoy about Backspacer, but I'm not gonna lie and say it couldn't have been so much more, especially after that wait. I'm expecting that the next album will do that again -- not match up to our years waiting for it -- but this time I won't let that affect me. I'll just say what I think about it and go on with my day.turned2black wrote:harmless wrote:They really tried hard to love it just because of how long they'd waited. And I still feel pretty bitter about it. I don't think you can retrack Backspacer without knowing what the fixin's would be.

It's sad that this band has stopped being the "soundtrack to my life." I reference times in my life to the albums, but that stops after RA.harmless wrote:Me too. Totally. Still, today I was playing No Code to myself and thinking just how cool it is that my 7 favourite albums in the world are all by Pearl Jam. They had a good run and from now on I'll enjoy listening to what they do, laughing sometimes, cringing other times, and sometimes even being entertained.turned2black wrote:It's sad that this band has stopped being the "soundtrack to my life." Re: retracking backspacer
I feel really lucky. Backspacer became over the course of 2009-2010 one of my favorite albums. I know I am like the only one that feels that way, but I really love the album as it speaks to me. Unthought known and Just breathe for me. are in the two slot of Pearl Jam songs as I believe in ties
so at #1 we have Black, Cordaroy and Givento Fly 2# we have Long Road, Ylb, Do the Evolution, Off he goes, Uthought Known and Just Breathe. Yes I think there are major misteps on this record. Sometimes tripping up a little is a good thing it adds a human element to the whole thing. Ten was missing this.Yield had some trip ups as did Vs, but they were and are great albums.

I find it pretty frustrating and sorta depressing. I guess I come to RM for the disappointment.harmless wrote:Totally. Backspacer is a good album. Eddie and O'Brien got in the way of it being a great album. I spin it quite a bit and enjoy parts of every song but I think it goes back to whoever said it would have been more accepted if the breaks between albums weren't so great.Tj wrote:I feel really lucky. Some days it's all of that for me too. Listening to those new / old leaked tracks yesterday threw me into a rage all day, which was swiftly followed by a come down that felt pretty depressing. THIS BAND was given up for that band.turned2black wrote:I find it pretty frustrating and sorta depressing. I guess I come to RM for the disappointment.harmless wrote:Totally. Re: retracking backspacer
could be, but I continue to think the biggest issue is managing schedules. How many other bands at their level have their members involved in as many side ventures as PJ does? I suspect this creates a a cycle that makes it harder to get together to record. Not the only issue for sure, but what I continue to suspect is the most significant.theplatypus wrote:Pearl Jam like to treat their albums like the unveiling of a grand new building. They need countdowns and announcements and teasers and marketing partners and a big song-and-dance. They don't seem to have it in them to record a bunch of new songs and just put them out there. I wonder how much that has to do with the ridiculous time-between-releases vs. actual-music-released ratio of the last decade.

Re: retracking backspacer
Backspacer has few of my very favorite songs on it (maybe the fixer, GSMF, and Force of Nature) but i love this album for how much I consistently like it. Other than the supersonic stumble there isn't a song on here I feel like skipping.Tj wrote:I feel really lucky. Backspacer became over the course of 2009-2010 one of my favorite albums. Yield is great but red dot really tries to crash that album without vocals it would have been a great 7th inning stretch, but those vocals are nails to a chalk board. Wishlist I like for what it is but it doesnt fit the record to me could have been a great b side,. For me lead single Brain of J with Wishlist as a Bside Then Gtf as the second single

Funny even Supersonic. Which I didn't like or hate but would skip cause it was so bla. Became at the time my Kids favorite song. So seeing 18 month old jam to Supersonic made me play it more than I would have otherwise then it kinda grew on me. Like how blackberrys somehow make a old barn or fence row come to life.

I agree with you about red dot. That's one reason I don't worship Jack. I'm all for whimsical non-songs, especially the ones on Vitalogy, but red dot is pretty awful and 'war' isn't even a theme on Yield, hardly.Tj wrote:Yield is great but red dot really tries to crash that album without vocals it would have been a great 7th inning stretch, but those vocals are nails to a chalk board.
