I'm not necessarily impressed by O'Brien's resume post-2000. Has anyone listened to any of the other albums he's produced recently (especially since around the 2009 Backspacer era) to see if they are all overly compressed? Is it just his style to squeeze songs til they're shit?

No, I haven't looked at that before. Not sure why. Maybe because I didn't want to punish myself and lose hope that we could have a proper Pearl Jam album again. But since the link is here...

I remember he was asked about it in PJ radio, and said it was a industry thing. Rick Rubin´s new albums are also pretty brickwalled.

I didn't mind his production on the few tracks from the last Killers album he did. They felt like they had more space in them than anything on Backspacer.

I didn't know he'd done A Crow Left of the Murder. I like that album, it's the last really good Incubus album.

Also, I remember Issues by Korn feeling quite roomy. I haven't listened to it in over a decade but it felt like their most live and 'roomy' album to date, like their Riot Act.

After my buddy showed me the effort that Porcupine Tree puts in to the recording and sound quality of their albums (and the result) , any other excuse is just either laziness, lack of ability or not caring.

He also did Light Grenades which I found to have a very empty sound.

In late 2008, mastering engineer Bob Ludwig offered three versions of the Guns N' Roses album Chinese Democracy for approval to co-producers Axl Rose and Caram Costanzo. They selected the one with the least compression. Ludwig wrote, "I was floored when I heard they decided to go with my full dynamics version and the loudness-for-loudness-sake versions be damned."[15] Ludwig said the "fan and press backlash against the recent heavily compressed recordings finally set the context for someone to take a stand and return to putting music and dynamics above sheer level."

One of the albums listed in the "criticized for their loudness" is the 2009 Ten Redux

Yeah, "it's an industry thing" is a terrible excuse. A major cop-out. Pearl Jam are an independent band now, effectively free agents without domestic label backing. They could bypass the "industry standard" and put out a record that lived up to their purported audiophile inclinations if they really wanted to.

Yeah, I didn't mention it because I didn't really like it. I found it boring. But you just reminded me how thin it sounded. I guess the songs could've been enhanced by a fuller sound.
