It would be interesting to see more of these preview comments about LB tracks and compare when we actually get the album.

So far, the band's written a total of 25 songs, but the final track listing will have around a dozen songs — and the decision about which tracks make the final cut largely rests with "Ed, because he's writing 95 percent of the lyrics," Ament said. But the bassist did reveal some potential song names: "Marker," "Crapshoot Rapture," "Worldwide Suicide," "Cold Concession," "2X4" and "Severed Hand."

Ament singled out two other tracks as his current favorites. "One is called 'Of the Earth,' that's a song Ed wrote that is kind of a cross between early Peter Gabriel/ Genesis and Sleater-Kinney with, like, the Who's Live at Leeds or something. There's also a song that Stone brought in that Ed wrote some great lyrics to [a song] called 'Parachutes.' That's probably one of my favorite pieces of music that Stone has written in a long time. It's got a beautiful melody.

It's very interesting that it says 'around a dozen' here. I'm speculating, but might that be why there are a dozen placeholders online at the moment? They've said it'll be 'about 12' but haven't decided which ones yet? I find that possibility both encouraging and worrying. Encouraging for obvious reasons, but worrying because surely, there must be some great songs just *begging* to go on the album, and if there aren't...

First time on the board, new album anticipation has got me going a bit I guess. It is nice to have a forum with other fanatics.

I agree with the frustration of some of the best material being left off the albums. I can't quite figure it out. Binaural is the most glaring example, as Sad, Fatal, In the Moonlight, and Education would rank as equal or better than most of the other songs on Binaural. (although there are some very good tracks on there as is.) Certainly a re-tracked album with those in place of the 4 weakest Binaural tracks would have been an improved record, possibly one of their best records. As it stands it has its moments but is mostly uneven in my opinion.

There are certainly times that a great song doesnt quite fit an album for thematic reasons. Hard to Imagine would be an example, as this doesnt quite fit on Vitalogy.

I havent heard the two new Avocado outtakes yet, (waiting on this for some reason- not sure why, it doesnt feel right until I find some more info on why these are leaking now- maybe they will be on Lightning Bolt?), although I am not surprised to hear how good they are. It totally fits PJ to leave off some of their best material.

The question is why? Why is Sad left off the album? How has Falling Down only been played once and never released? Why is Of the Earth left of S/T but Gone is included?(my apologies to those who like Gone) Heres to hoping for a Lost Dogs 2 some day to release some of this stuff officially.

Just for the record, these are not complaints, I am very appreciative of what this band has given me through the years, and still does to this day. Just some of these decisions are a little puzzling.

While I tend to agree that some of the later offerings from the band aren't quite up to the same level as earlier albums, each of the "newer" albums are great in their own rights. I was at the Chicago show and while Lightning Bolt and Future Days didn't jump out at me, I'll reserve judgement until I hear the actual songs the records. The 3 hour delay didn't do Ed's voice any justice and I imagine Future Days will sound much better on the album itself.

This gets me to the two b-sides that were leaked. I'm still digesting them so I'll reserve judgement until I get quite a few listens under my belt. That being said, early reviews on them are that they are great songs.

I wanted to address b-sides in general. I became a fan of Ten when it released. The whole album blew me away. A few months after getting the album I stumbled upon the Jeremy single and was blown away. I couldn't believe how good Yellow Ledbetter and Footsteps were. Soon after I found Wash, Alone, Dirty Frank, etc. The Singles soundtrack came out and Breath and SOLAT blew me away again.

The elusive Hard to Imagine was probably my holy grail for b-sides and I remember being in college listening to crappy versions of it waiting for the day to get a live version or a better version of it. Chicago Cab came out and I was finally satisfied although the song was a little different from the original version that I had heard. Lost Dogs sealed it with a perfect version of the song.

The point of this is that Pearl Jam has always made phenomenal b-sides that did not make it on the record. For whatever reason the band decided to hold off on releasing them. I guess the big difference was back in the day that they released b-sides so you were not left searching for songs that were rumored to exist.

When Vitalogy came out people were scratching their heads. Same thing with No Code. Those were and are still two of my favorite albums.

Everyone needs to step away from the ledge. The new PJ record will be great. Will you love every song in 20 years, probably not. Will they be bad songs? Probably not again. The band still writes great songs and maybe they can or cannot put together an album like Ten or Yield again but they can still write a great song. The band all have families and are happier now than they probably have ever been. I met/talked to Eddie 3 times in Chicago. I can say for sure he is in a better place. As is Mike.

Will their happiness reflect in their music? Sure, I've always said that once bands sober up and make some good money their music suffers. This hasn't been as extreme in Pearl Jam by any means but yeah, they may write things a little differently nowadays. Doesn't make them a bad band or not aware of what the fans want. It's just where they are at in their lives right now.

Accept it and enjoy all the great music they've made over the years.

They have not been making great music. That's the bottom line. They have been making good music but they are the abridged version of what they were. There is something currently wrong with the PJ formula. I listen to the music coming from Ament, Gossard, Matt and Ed outside the band and there is a lot of great things going on. The Magic seems to be fading. Tracks like Cold Confession come along and it is a prime example of when the formula works and rekindles a hope that it could come back.

and FFS no one is jumping off the ledge. That ledge is about 7 years over our heads. I enjoy Pearl Jam. They are hands down my favorite band and ill be honest, it is the past that keeps me as invested as I am in the band. I enjoy S/T and BS for what they are but they are no where on the level of anything from 92-03 in terms of commitment, craft, musicianship and execution. I don't think there is a person on this board who wouldn't acknowledge when a truly great new song comes from the band.

I know some love Backspacer and that's fine but the whole "don't evaluate what your hearing because you should be lucky they are still making music" is just a lazy approach that the band seems to be counting on the fans to have.
