i used to absolutely hate Thumbing My Way. i probably listened to it 2-3 times in five years. but something about it just clicked eventually. i completely agree that it's the beginning of those Ed songs that probably should be Ed solo songs, and maybe i would have initially liked it more had it gotten the Sleeping By Myself treatment (solo first, then full band). but Ed really does a great job at capturing a particular sadness with his guitar, especially those opening chords.LetMeSleep wrote:Thumbing is a chore for me. Matt phones it in. Ed is mediocre. It's the start of Ed songs that don't belong in PJ.guestT wrote:after "you are" is when it starts to feel a bit more scattershot to meLetMeSleep wrote:The sequencing of the first 6 tracks is great. Then it's a bit of a mess. Good material just shambolic sequencing.
the problem i've always had with it is that it's just too wordy sometimes (except for that line where he just hums, bc why not). too many syllables being forced into a line. and yes, while i have come around on it, it's definitely quite boring if you're not in the mood for it. it's very much an of-the-moment song.
