Coming around on this one some with playing it a few more times. I think Matt actually takes it out of the standard anthemic ramp-up in the first verse more than I gave him credit for.

LB is one of those songs that you gotta try reeeally hard to trick yourself into liking, and that's exactly what you dont want songs to be. When I listened to it for the first time I thought no way, not another "Fixer", please let me unhear it! Then I started seeing lots of positive comments on Youtube (a couple of them were angry responses to my own critical postings) and thought well its got have something, these many people cannot all be wrong, can they? I listened to it again and thought OK there are things to like for sure, like Mike's diligent solo for instance. But then I woke up in the morning with a clear mind, played it again and realized that it was still shit. Almost deluded myself into accepting it as good! Damn. I think thats what all those people are doing in reality - convinsing themselves thats its good. But wait and see. Its getting shelved just like the fixer by the majority of the fanbois in a few months time.

I understand you don't like it. That's fine. I do like it, a lot. Is it really necessary that everyone who likes what you don't is deluding themselves into liking it? Maybe it's just more likely that people have different preferences. I know Binaural and Riot Act are liked by many here but I genuinely find them to be hard to listen to all the way through. There are very few songs from those albums which do anything for me.
Pearl Jam is the only band I'll spend money on.

You're right, there is no measuring of tastes.Release_Me wrote:I understand you don't like it. That's fine. I do like it, a lot. However, you can go by objective data and look at examples. I chose "The Fixer" as an example because it's very illustrative. The majority of people who said they liked it are now feeling a sort of embarassement about it, myself included.
Of course I have no way of knowing that LB is going to follow the same path as The Fixer, but I'm GUESSING I might be right. Time will tell.

Re: New Song: Lightning Bolt
Well, my feelings about The Fixer are the same today as they were when it came out. It's a good song, but not great. I particularly like the "I'll dig your grave, we'll dance and sing" part. That was awesome. The yeah yeah is overdone though. I thought it was overdone in Porch as well. Ed does that sometimes. Anyway, I think Backspacer has better songs than this and I feel no embarrassment in saying I like any of them because I would rather like what I like than like what I am supposed to.

Maybe not exactly the way I phrased it, but let's look at Youtube views numbers:theplatypus wrote:There is absolutely no way you can measure or demonstrate this.Lounge Lizard wrote:However, you can go by objective data and look at examples. - The Fixer: 1.3 million in 4 years.
- MYM: 1.2 million in 1.5 weeks.
If the trend continues, this should be enough to draw at least some conclusion, no?
