I don't think this is true. Especially in the CD era. Besides, a whole lot of "classic" double albums are single CDs (London Calling, Exile On Main Street, Tusk, Rattle & Hum, etc.).

What major bands that started in the CD era have double albums besides The Smashing Pumpkins?
Didn't RHCP release a double a wee while back?
Yeah, Stadium Arcadium. But it was too thinly spread, they could have easily made a much stronger single album with the best tracks. I guess it was their 'experimental' album.
I suspect this is the case with all double albums

foo fighters i think too
Yep, that was 'In Your Honor'. A double album with a split personality, disk 1 was their heavy rock side, and disk 2 was their ballad/soft side (with a couple of duet/cameos i.e. Norah Jones). Not a bad album, disk 1 was much better though.

yeah - 'hypnotize/mesmerize' i think its called. its the album after 'toxicity'. it had one single that was pretty popular, maybe more so than 'chop suey'. im pretty sure there's a # of rap albums that are double albums, but most people here dont like rap.

Didn't Metallica have a double albums? Green Day had a crazy triple album gimmick a couple years ago if I recall correctly. I wouldn't mind something like that, sort of how Guns & Roses did. I'd gladly pay to purchase them separately like Radiohead and Coheed & Cambria.

Every few years we hear that PJ had so much music they made in studio that something like this might happen, yet it never materializes.

EDIT: I just found http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_double_albums

Hypnotize and Mesmerize were two seperate albums weren't they, but recorded during the same sessions - much like Radiohead's Kid A and Amnesiac?

It still feels like the roster of major alternative acts from the past thirty years who haven't made legitimate double albums is bigger than those who have. I'd argue more top heavy as well...

Pearl Jam, R.E.M., Nirvana, Beastie Boys, Oasis, Depeche Mode, Rage Against The Machine, The Pixies, The White Stripes, Muse, The Killers, Arcade Fire, Blur, Pulp, The Strokes, Soundgarden, Coldplay, The Black Keys, Stone Temple Pilots, Weezer, Incubus, Kings of Leon...

They released them separately, like 6 months apart, but I think the concept was that it was a double album.

Funny because both bands did the same thing.

Dammit edit again - i dont think radiohead was pitched as a double/concept in the same way soad did (mezmerize/hypnotize)

Nice, man. It's been a few months. I left my longboard at my friend's house up the coast thinking that it'd motivate me to go up there more often surf...hasn't worked out too well.
