I'm worried that, regardless of whether this album is good or not, it won't be something one can talk about endlessly.

I didn't think Backspacer was something one could talk about for more than a few minutes, but four years lately I've been proven extremely wrong.

True. Just look at the amount of discussion the 2 live tracks (plus MYM) have generated so far. I think this one will tie us over until the next one. If not, we'll just have to hope that Kurt can come through with some more B sides.

I don't think I have another backspacer in me.

okay, reality check. The following are bands/artists I like a lot but prefer backspacer to all of their output

Beck
Soundgarden
Bruce Springsteen
Counting Crows
Bright Eyes
Ani DiFranco
Fiona Apple
Dresden Dolls
Rage Against the Machine
Stone Temple Pilots
The White Stripes

Are you sure 'reality check' is the correct term for what you just had?

I dont think any of them have specifically stated it wont be on the album but Mike eluded to Ed not being happy with the studio taking of the song and have not really found a place for the song to fit on a record. That could have all changed once they found a direction for the album...
Direction of the album. Tone of the album. Concept of the album. Fuck that shit! Just put the best 12 songs together you cunts or else the concept of you next album is turd and its direction - the fucking sewer!

I am a little surprised by all the Brendan O'Brien bashing going on here. Yes Backspacer was a shiny, tight, new wave influenced record but that's what the band wanted to do. The production sounds fine to me given the parameters BOB was working in. This man produced Vs-Vitalogy-No Code-Yield so I'll continue to give him the benefit of the doubt. What remains to be see is if "Lightning Bolt" goes somewhere different like ALL Pearl Jam albums do. To me an album like No Code is a classic because it sounds like nothing from the band before or since. It was kind of shocking and even a little scary when I first heard it ("Is this what Pearl Jam will sound like now and forever?!"). If everything after that had been like exactly like No Code I'd have a problem. It's the same for Backspacer.

I'd agree with most of Stips list. If not all of it.
Jack white is a phoney. He's a con artist who's pulled one over on a lot of people.

So, apart from "tiny music" you're pretty much agreeing with me?

I seriously can't believe stip had the nerve to put some of those artists in that list.

Taste should never be argued. I can't stand a lot of the bands on stips list and the others I'm just indifferent to. One mans meat and all that.
