I for one, don't think their first three albums are their best. So there's that. But even taking that away, you're right. Anything can happen, hypothetically. The likelihood of the music just getting better is equal to the likelihood of it getting worse. I for one, am grateful that we have a post-Dave A Pearl Jam. Four of my top 5 PJ albums don't have him drumming on them. And my all time favorite PJ song would not have happened at all without Jack Irons.

So though you are correct that it's possible, I for one, will take actual reality over the imagined Dave-A-verse.

Between the 3 Vitalogy is the only album in my top 5. I'm so happy they went in different directions after Dave A.

Its crazy to me to think how special this band might have been had they kept Dave A

just throw out all the music after Vitalogy, and that's exactly who the band would be had they kept Dave A

Chances are Dave would have just been grudgingly dragged along the path Eddie was set on following anyway. I don't think his control over the band's creative direction was as all-influencing as MikeJD suggests.

Dave A. had already changed his playing to fit the larger vision. Listen to his drumming on Vitalogy. I think it's his best precisely because he tones down all the antics and plays the songs.
