Saw the band's final Great Circle Tour show on Friday night. I knew they were good live but I was blown away by how tight they were and the presence they had on stage (particularly Peter who is ageless it seems). Jim was still seated with his injury - very amusing when they went off for the encore and he just sat there in the dark while we all chanted his name :D

A fantastic vibe in the crowd (was nice to be one of the younger fans in the audience for a change!) with many sing-a-longs. The setlist was as good as I could have hoped for as a casual fan, only song I didn't hear that I would have like to was Dreamworld.

Setlist:

Redneck Wonderland
Read About It
Lucky Country
Warakurna
Hercules
Truganini
Put Down That Weapon
Stand in Line
Short Memory
When the Generals Talk
Who Can Stand in the Way (with Charlie McMahon on didgeridoo)
Treaty (Yothu Yindi cover) (with Yirrmal)
US Forces
Kosciusko
Only the Strong
The Dead Heart (with Charlie McMahon on didgeridoo)
Beds Are Burning
Don't Wanna Be the One
Blue Sky Mine
King of the Mountain

Encore:
Wedding Cake Island
Power and the Passion
Forgotten Years

Encore 2:
Best of Both Worlds

Nice set! Glad you enjoyed.

These guys really bought it on this tour. Like 'sleep said back in one of the first posts in this thread, "The Oils are back and don't we need them now".

Great tour by a great and important band.

I could do with perhaps a bit more Earth and Sun and Moon, which to my admittedly singular thinking is a stunning ecopop record. But I'm physically jealous nonetheless.

Never get much press over here in the UK, and are sadly considered One Hit Wonders for Beds Are Burning. Criminal that their catalogue is so underappreciated.

Saw them in '93 on the Earth & Sun & Moon tour in Birmingham and was blown away - Rob Hirst still one of the great drummers.

Wish I'd seen them in 1990 when Hunters & Collectors supported them.

Didn't make either London show this time around due to post Vedder empty wallet syndrome. Gutted to miss out.

Hopefully there'll be a live album/dvd released.

On a side note - has anyone found a *cough* friendly download source for the Full Tank remastered albums anywhere?

A recent facebook post by the band said they were going to do one/both of these with the Sydney Domain shows :hooray:

I downloaded my Perth show off of Dime today.

I really appreciate that people go to the effort and trouble to tape, but seriously I'm not sure that you should bother uploading your iphone recording from you pocket.

Not on Dime.

I should qualify my comment above too. The taper is a bloke named scmods who posts heaps of Oils stuff at Dime and, quite frankly, is a deadset legend. Pretty sure he's a Perth boy too. So if he wants to post his pocket phone recordings he bloody well can as far as I am concerned.

Obviously something that should've been included with the (fairly) recent boxsets but still.... :D

March 28, 2018

A vivid portrait of the era and the songs that embodied it.

MIDNIGHT OIL 1984 is the story of the sweat-soaked, hardworking rock and roll band whose music galvanised a generation of young Australians and inspired them to believe in the power of music to change the world.

Featuring the biggest hits from some of their most legendary shows, the movie gives you an Access All Areas pass to see the band behind the scenes and where the action is. Feel the electric energy on stage and witness the personal struggles of the band members as they try to balance the equally compelling demands of both music and politics when lead singer Peter Garrett decides to join the race for an Australian Government Senate seat.

MIDNIGHT OIL 1984 is an up close and personal look at the iconic rock band, seen on the big screen for the first time.

A new movie titled “MIDNIGHT OIL 1984” is coming to select Australian cinemas on May 10. Take a look at the trailer for the film which features fresh and rare footage from on and off stage of the Oils in the mid 80’s. Tickets and more info available via mad.mn/midnightoil1984.

For fans outside Australia, head over to the official Facebook event page Midnight Oil 1984 – The Movie and click “attending” – news about international rollout will be shared here as it is confirmed.

For sure, life's been something these past 4 months alright, but I think that getting back to this would do me some good.

And Red Sails is my fave Oils album to boot.
