It might be even worse than youtube views actually, because at least youtube views ARE youtube views, when Metacritic will sometimes make up ratings for reviews that don't have any.

So yeah, sure, you can always think it's some sort of barometer anyway but it's one that makes as much sense as the guy who sees the rapture in Lightning Bolt's artwork.
I think when people start talking about how objectively bad some things are the critical reception is a perfectly reasonable thing to respond with. Flawed, but the whole question is flawed

I'm not pointing at the flaws of critical reception per se, I'm saying that this particular and bogus way of amalgamating is very very flawed. Actually I'd say stupid instead of flawed. Anyway, who cares about that, the rapture is coming.

People "vote" in many different ways ;)
Sometimes they vote by not voting. My favorite Pearl Jam song, and one of the band's best songs (objectively speaking of course), has 123,000 views on YouTube which begs the question:

If an In My Tree falls in the forest and there's nobody around to like it, dislike it, or view it, does it make a sound?

Well, it can also be imperfect because there's a video for Fixer and Mind Your Manners in a way there's not for In My Tree. Let's say someone wants to see The Fixer; more often than not, they'll click on The Fixer music video. If someone wants to hear In My Tree or Indifference or whatever, there's lyric videos, there's live versions, dozens of each type (maybe hundreds, when it comes to live versions). There's no one video that's pushed the most.

That's a slight hiccup as well.

The lesson is that youtube is just another one of the many things that is a crappy way of judging 'the public's' perception on things.

Err in our ways you see
the quality of a song is not measured by popularity
Views and sales only show whats hot
an indicator of a good song they are not
some of the best songs like In My Tree
have been largely hidden for you and me

I don't think if you gather up enough poor metrics you'll eventually land at a good one.

It's ok on 1st listen. I need to hear the studio version or a good live version to get a better idea. I doubt this one is any faster than the studio version. It's neo-PJ by the numbers from what i can tell.

Loving Ed's singing in this one, especially the parts where his voice soars after the low verses and then in the outro. He's in excellent form here. Made some headway with the lyrics today, especially the ending.

She comes on like a storm
but she don't know where from she was thrown
like a hurtling meteor
from miles high

She's looking for a place to land
She said, 'you got yourself some sand'?
And whatever you reply, she took as 'yes'

Now she comes out to be
With her newly planted seeds
And soon you're thrown down on your knees
And then you're dead

And then before you know
The weeds are obesely overgrown
With the all the wild seeds she sows
in your sleep

you gotta know you'll never let her go
She's a lightning bolt
lightning boltx2

Always something and never nothing
isn't that the way we're taught to dream? To dream
looking through the worn out pages
And stages when you knew not who to be
until the lightning strike, sets you free

you gotta know you'll never let her go
She's a lightning bolt
lightning boltx2

Crashing stormy waves
Erode her shoreline every day
Until the castle of her ways turns to sand

And then before you know
the weeds are obesely overgrown
With the all the wild seeds she sows
in your sleep

And with no repair in sight
There is no God with such might
As you open her world wide with such a view
And your death will soon arrive
As she finally decides
That all the problems they will die with you

She's a lightning bolt
never let her go
Shes a lightning bolt
never let her go
