I don't like to suggest he was trying to be clever, but that alternative interpretation was the intent.

I feel like on Twitter and in the media, we've done this hundreds of times since the start of the campaign; thinking, "no, he couldn't have meant that." He meant the sleazy, scummy thing; that's never a bad bet to take.
