Seeing this again tomorrow and I'll catch up with this thread tomorrow, but in the meantime here is a reaction dump.
Spoiler: show
What I Loved
Everything about Kylo's arc. They teased the redemption arc perfectly and then walked away from it in a way that felt honest and real. Putting him in charge of the first order at the end was a great move

Killing Snoke. I love that Kylo killed him, the way that whole scene played out, and that they set up this mega powerful dude and then killed him off. Given the way he was set up to be the big bad that was a shocking move.

Everything they did with Luke - especially the stuff on Crait. I thought he had already died and was now a force ghost. The projection was set up perfectly, foreshadowed and surprised me when it happened.

Luke's death was moving

Great relationship between Luke and Rey. The story of what turns Ben to Kylo Ren was nicely done

Luke tossing the lightsaber was a great IDGAF moment

The Vice Admiral Hodo story was quite good. I like how they set Poe up to be the impulsive dick and she was always a hero. The light speed destruction of the imperial fleet was AWESOME, and her final exchange with Leia (especially because of carrie fisher's death) had me in legit tears.

Nice arc for Poe, and a strong set up as they'll have him be the leader of the resistance in the next movie.

I love that Rey's parents really were no one and we broke the 'everyone is related' cycle. All of Rey's work was outstanding. The way they played into the Jedi conversion of Vader, and then reversed it at the end by having Ren still be evil was excellent.

Chewie had a lot of fun moments

The porgs were adorable.

Yoda's scene was a genuine surprise.

I like that the movie ends with the idea of rebellion and resistance being something you cannot snuff out as long as hope exists, even if you're no one. The right message for these times.

Phasma had a nice moment. I presume she survives and comes back as a robot.

Finn's transformation into a full on rebel was well done.

Benico Del Toro's character was fun.

Fun stuff with BB8 - they upped his competence and power but it wasn't obnoxious like what they did with R2.

The ship combat was all really good.

strong ship design - especially those orbital pkatform thingies

god i love the falcon

humor basically always landed and wasnt distracting

What I was less thrilled with.

Love the idea of Canto Bight, but that stuff was too rushed, and movie would have been better without it
Still not sold on why Hux is in the position he is in, other than the fact that Snoke seemed to be a child predator
The Leia in space stuff wasn't necessary - though I guess it may have paid off had she lived
I figured Lando would come in to save them in the end, and was disappointed when he didn't.
The actress playing Rose was fine, and she had a nice hero moment at the end, but since her story revolved around the weakest scene that was disappointing.

Obviously Mark Hamill is amazing, and a terribly underrated actor. I wanted a different story for Luke, at least to leave the planet. But I accept it for what it was.

There is too much to go over with the rest. But I feel like I could pick it apart scene after scene. With the New Order never catching up to the rebels, Snoke just ending with no story, so many of the scenes being holograms, Poe’s failed plan and mutiny, Rey being set up to be some poor girl with a big heart and no backstory, Leia with Jedi powers in space, so many silly comedy moments, that it felt a lot like the prequels, and much more.
Spoiler: show
I think everything you just mentioned there (with the exception of Leia in space) was a strength, and really well and subtly written. This is a much more challenging story, and almost all the characters play against their story archtype while still having rational motivations. I look forward to arguing about this with you in the morning

I thought this movie was challenging and clever and inverted expectations while staying true to the heart of what a star wars movie is. A fantastic piece of story telling
Spoiler: show
with the exception of the canto bight arc

Also, Rogue One needed a crawl and opening fanfare. That shit means so much to me

too new to rank, but hangs with the best. Initial gut is better than R1, probably better than TFA and Jedi. Not sure where it ranks with Empire and New Hope. But no way to be sure until it becomes familiar

Hey stip!
Spoiler: show
I liked the sublte clues that Luke wasn't what he seemed on Crait. Did you notice how he appeared as the slightly younger version of himself that appeared in the Ben back story? And the emphasis of the red patterns made by Kylo's feet, whereas Luke's made no impression?

I agree with your phasma theory.
We saw her dramatic fall, but never the landing or a dead body.
Maybe she'll finally have more depth and substance in the final chapter. I feel she's been quite 2 dimensional up til now.

Spoiler: show
Del Toro's character was quite good. I liked that he was an imperfect person. A stammer, slightly unhinged, but also a genius. And selling out the Restiance for a reward was a great twist.
He survived right? If so, I hope he returns.

Where does Rey get her powers from? No training and she is as powerful as the most powerful Jedi we know of? Doesn't make any sense to me. Are you really telling me that there is nothing else The New Order could have done to catch the rebels? How about the rebel ship having an amazing shield, but the much more impressive dreadnought didn't seem to have any. It was attacked by a single ship, and there wasn't nothing they could do. Luke grew as a person and character, and carried the first three films. Now he's back to being someone Yoda has to yell at. The whole Snoke subplot should be impossible to defend. It was really terrible. No background, just some evil lord that built the New Order. Now he's dead. Rey and Kylo killed the guards, but now they are sworn enemies again.

Re Rey's parents 'reveal'. I'd like to believe Kylo was lying or trying to use mind altering force powers to make her lose hope and therefore join him.
I do see a lot of Obi Wan in her, so we may get a more definitive answer in EP IX.

On another note, the stableboy using force power at the end may have seemed like a shitty tack on.
I think it was more of a message to state that force powers may not strictly be hereditary. Perhaps the force can occur randomly, or the force itself chooses who can have the power. There seems to be a pattern of poor children with one or no parents having these powers.

There's a chance we may learn more about Snoke in EP IX. Perhaps we'll learn that there's more to him than just an evil old deformed fucker.
Maybe we'll learn something that will make us realise that him dying was a bad thing.

The shield thing? Yeah, doesn't really make sense. Although I seem to remember from the previous movies that larger ships could not generate their own shields.
Look at how the Death Star had to have a shield generator on Endor.

I like that they broke with tradition and had Rey be a nobody. Luke said it himself - it's vanity to assume that the force is about the specific person. Rey is special just because, because she can harness the Force. I think it makes the Force all that more magical/impressive/special. We don't know where this story arc for Rey will end. It seems likely that Rey becomes a Grey Jedi, striking that perfect balance between light and dark without fully surrendering to the dark side as Kylo seems to have finally done. This is a bold film, breaking from traditions and taking what we think are established norms and turning them on their head. Rey is special, but not because of her lineage. I love it, but can completely understand why people would hate it. However, we only have ourselves to blame because TFA never hinted that her parents were special, or a Skywalker or Kenobi. We just knew she was left and held out hope that they would return. The fans took it from there and came up with a million theories. It was a braver move to have her be no relation to anyone we know.

Maybe I'm wrong, but the dreadnought DID have a shield didn't it? That's why Poe stalled for time and pretended he couldn't hear General Hux at the beginning. He was riling him up but it clearly showed they were uploading some kind of hack that broke the shield which then allowed him to take out the canons and allowed the bombs to drop.

Luke wasn't just back to being someone Yoda could yell it. I'd argue he needed that little talking to. I think Yoda turned up when he did because he knew Luke was full of shit. He sensed that Luke didn't truly truly believe the jedi should end despite his protests to Rey and didn't have the balls to actually burn down the tree with the jedi texts. Luke needed that little pep talk to accept that the old jedi order did in fact need to end. Also, yeah Luke had a great arc in the OT but I never got the vibe that he was super powerful and wiser than someone like Yoda. After all, it was Vader who killed the Emperor and not Luke. He wasn't exactly a loser in this, either. The guy pulled off some damn impressive astral projection which damn near killed him, which allowed the Resistance to escape and survive. That's one of the biggest things he's ever done in all of the films.

The Snoke thing - eh. I personally loved it, but it was definitely sudden and his background could definitely have been explored further before his demise. However, for me Kylo Ren always had to be the big bad villain of the new franchise. Snoke felt like another Palpatine. He was scary and Serkis was wonderful in performance, but it was a traditional Star Wars final boss type so I'm glad they went the other way. It led to a perfect lightsaber battle which showed how powerful Kylo and Rey could be as a team, and then flipped it again to show that they're in fact further apart than they were before. They helped each other in the chamber because each believed the other would turn and join their side. Rey was obviously very in tune with the dark side, as shown during her brief training with Luke, but this pretty much cemented that she's sticking to the light side for now whereas Kylo is totally lost.

Sorry for so much rambling, but the more I think about it the more I love it all. Except for the Canto Bight arc, which I didn't particularly enjoy despite excellent showings from Finn and Rose.

I actually thought the stable boy scene was one of the better ones. We already know that the force comes to many different people. It's not like the stable boy defeated a troop of highly trained force sensitive soldiers. He's just got something, and has the chance to learn a lot more with time.

I do hope that we get more answers in Ep IX. I was saying the same thing yesterday to my friends, who were all excited about the movie. I kept it cool and wasn't too critical as we were leaving the cinema, so as not to bring them down. But the more I thought about the movie, I understood how much of it bothered me. Everyhing about the Snoke arc (or lack of), and the thing with Rey's parents, will hopefully be improved upon by IX.

How about those rebel bombers though? Just because Poe took out some cannons, they were impossible to hit? Those really slow moving things that couldn't defend themselves? While Rey/Snoke/Luke etc goes to the main arc, these battle scenes are different. It would be so easy to make them less flawed. Just look at Rogue One.

Also the casino world scene felt so off. Even if part of it was among the best parts of the movie, it's they way they threw it in as a subplot in the middle of the movie, and then it ended up meaning very little.

I don't see any grey in Rey. So far she has made all the right choices at all the right times. She's like a perfect angel. Even Luke in the OT had more grey in him. However, even if everything you say about her parents is true (which would be typical Disney), it seems terribly unlikely that she would instantly be as powerful as anyone from the get go. And why the strange connection to Kylo? Just another random thing.

I think ending the Jedi order and burning the old books is a really boring storyline, and not in line with the OT. Also burning old books at all is never really a good idea. Further, Luke had grown immensely by the end of Return Of The Jedi. Yet, here we are decades later, and he's basically a loser. Given up on everything he believed in and his family. Impressive (more like impossible) hologram at the end, and then he vanished. Could have been done so much better.

I won't even argue about the Snoke thing. His whole arc was a waste of time.

Spoiler: show
Where does Rey get her powers from?
Spoiler: show
I like that they broke with tradition and had Rey be a nobody.

Spoiler: show
I don't see any grey in Rey.

Spoiler: show
My buddy I saw it with last night said he saw the books in that drawer in the Falcon Finn pulls the blanket for Rose out of. Which makes Yoda's comment about Rey having everything she needs even more powerful. I'll be looking for this when I see it again this afternoon.

Loved the movie. While I understand why it was done, and it was done beautifully, I hate the fact Luke Skywalker is dead. I know Fisher's passing kinda fucked their plans up, but now there won't be ANY of the original three in IX. And I'm sure Chewbacca's role will be as minimal, or even less minimal, in it. Sad.

Was the crescent medallion thing from the Whills from Rogue One?

A friend of mine said he saw the Ghost underwater next to Luke's X-Wing. A) it would make no sense for it to be there and B) it wasn't there.

We finally got to see a badass Luke Skywalker fighting. Even though it was just a Force image, he kicked fucking ass.

Yoda was a very pleasant surprise.

Snoke getting killed was a big surprise. And it was really cool how it was done.

Like TFA, there were many callbacks to the Original Trilogy, but TLJ wasn't a sly redo. It has its own legs to stand on.

Very curious and excited to see where the next chapter leads us.
