Re: Star Wars: Episode VIII: The Last Jedi (2017)
I'm yet to have a second viewing (next Friday now), but I'm glad that Rian really challenged a lot of expectations here. There were a lot of twists and turns in the story. This is what many fans were screaming for after TFA, but I wonder if it's those same fans that are now claiming this to be the worst ever in the entire franchise.
I challenge those same fans to watch the snore-fest that is AOTC again. The galactic senate rubbish was so dragged out. Gah, I'm never able to rewatch that without falling asleep.
However TLJ seemed to kick straight into the action, and maintained a steady rhythm for the length of the movie.

stip wrote:i disagree 100%. its the extra scruitny and consideration that is going to favorably resolve a lit of the initial negative gut reactions. This is very nuanced and subtle storytelling (for star wars) that plays against the simple morality and bright lines we normally expect in these movies. it will take time to work itself out.B wrote:I enjoyed this film, but it is going to absolutely crumble under scrutiny.
Yeah agreed. There’s a whole lot going on here that unfolds almost too much and that’s why people seem to be missing the numerous subtleties woven into each character and their arc.

Do we believe Ren's statements about Rey's parents?
Everything's perfectly all right now. We're fine. We're all fine here, now, thank you. How are you?

I think I'm worried that a lot of unknowns from TFA are tied up and now we're handing this back to JJ Abrams to give us a bunch of unanswered nonsense questions again.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VIII: The Last Jedi (2017)
I had some weird trailers before this movie.
Tomb Raider
Sampson
Alpha
Jurassic World
The Greatest Showman
I leaned over to my wife during the Alpha trailer and asked her, "are we in the right theater?"

stip youll like this
I really like this take on the film: https://www.avclub.com/part-kurosawa-pa ... 1821291545
One thing that threatens to get lost in the back-and-forth over the film's story choices and individual moments is how Johnson has made probably the most cinematically ambitious entry the series has seen. He manages to take various inspirations and homages (as one observant poster pointed out earlier, the initial casino establishing shot appears to be a direct nod to Wings, and as alluded to in the article above there's clear inspirations from a different era of Japanese cinema than Lucas embraced) and casually mixes them with his own ideas. He definitely IMO manages to create one of the most visually fetching, cine-literate blockbusters of recent times.

Good movie. I had fun. My 11-year-old daughter had fun. I feel like the Finn and Rose stuff was a little clunky, but not "prequel-level" clunky. I can't think of anything else that I disliked. It was a well-made movie, top to bottom.
