9. The Force has its Coffee.........Jedi, Sith, Dark Jedi, Non-Jedi/Sith force users, force stuff everywhere. Years later there's thousands of Jedi and Sith and they're in a huge war.

Hmm, dunno exactly how I feel about this one - thought it got off to a jerky start, had some love it or hate it moments, and had a cracking final half.

Defo need to see it again though.

That's something I didn't quite understand either. Why didn't they trust Poe? Were they further punishing him? Why treat him like a child?

Well, there's an argument that this is a military organization, and you don't demand answers from your superiors. You shut up and do what you're told.

Still, she would have controlled him better if she'd just told him. Everyone on that ship would have been more comfortable knowing they were going to get away. Finn & Rose wouldn't have gone onto the New Order's ship and ruined the whole fucking plan.

It's interesting that someone didn't like it halway through, but then warmed up to it. When I saw it at the cinema, it was the opposite. There was actually a technical difficulty that led to a short break right after Luke told Rey to reach out. We had time for a quick chat in the group I was with, and everyone was positive. Even I said something like: "it's good". There were some things I wanted to point out with Luke, the humour, how the first battle went etc, but I didn't want to ruin anything for anyone. Either way, in general I was thinking positive thoughts. After that it went downhill for me. The silly subplot with the casino and the Maz scene, the neverending chase, lots of force projection, the admiral Holdo story, Snoke dying so easily, Poe trying and failing again, BB8 being amazing in everything, Finn and Rose doing so well after the big crash and later with the kissing scene, everyone getting to the salt planet for a weird battle sequence. By the end I was only thinking about how it was important that I didn't sound too negative when walking out of the cinema. No one wants to kill the mood.

I sort of let that slide, but felt the one figher against incredible odds and the slow bombers were a bit silly, and not in line with the high quality we have seen before from such battles. Then Luke threw the lightsaber. But either way I was just so excited to be seeing new Star Wars, that I let it slide.

also small ships being able to frustrate larger ships designed for massive combat is the basic principle behind the first death star attack. the last jedi is pretty faithful to the grammar of star wars alongside the most sophisticated character work in the series

Yeah and then at the end on Crait, when Hux doesn't want to let Ren go down to face Luke, and then Ren just force-throws him up against the wall and out of the way, felt a little Marvel-ish to me.

Not to geek out too much, but I still think there is a chance DJ could be Ezra. He talked about both sides being good and bad in all of his scenes. Like some dude that has seen too much and all but given up, just doing whatever he can to survive. I know that is a stretch, but let me have this hope.

There have probably been one or two scenes before that have been a bit much, but I always felt they explained it well, actually got captured, or narrowly escaped. Here he is just beating everyone without much effort.

One thing that is sticking with me is how small-scale this movie is. It feels almost cheap and claustrophobic. Johnson doesn’t seem to think in scale or spectacle. Even the climax - it’s like a handful of walkers against one door. It’s downright tiny compared to the sprawling imagination of previous SW movies. He seems to have trouble juggling multiple balls at once in terms of action and location. As much as I hate TFA, even Abrams was better at this.

I think one thing is that this movie has the main characters much more involved with the larger war waging between the First Order and Resistance. It feels like the film is trying to focus on the large scale stuff, without making it about the characters (in some parts of the film. Even though I have some issues with Luke, I don't have a lot of issues with him and Rey). It felt similar to how the prequels were way too involved with the government stuff.

ANH: characters are the main focus, and basically interact with the Rebel Alliance at the end to help destroy the Death Star
ESB: characters are with the Rebels and help with the escape, but then do their own thing.
ROTJ: Characters do their own thing, only meeting up with the Rebels to help take down DS 2

TLJ: most of the group is with the Resistance the whole time.

Its still baffling to me that Hux can be consider a character. Its basically a joke.

fun fact I just learned about Hux and that opening scene. Apparently in one of the EU canon books Hux's father is rescued by the empire along with his illegitimate son. So that mother dig actually has some history behind it

This movie has a tighter focus on character and dynamic character arcs (for Luke, Poe, Rey, Kylo, and Finn) than probably any other movie. Characters aren't introduced, but they all undergo significant change by the end. S
