Rian did a Q&A after a screening in LA and was asked specifically about Rey's parentage.
Basically, Rian said he wrote down every possible parent idea he could think of: Obi-Wan, Luke, Han & Leia, Snoke, Plagueous, Palpatine and on and on. He tried to play out how all of these would go and he ultimately decided that the best possible/most satisfying and appropriate option was for her parents to be "no one special" because it presented an obstacle for Rey to overcome.

I'm so glad that Rian took this path in regards to Rey's parents. I hope JJ sticks with it through EP IX.Sgt. - Have someone related to somebody. i.e. One of the key good guys is related to one of the bad guys. And someone is the descendant of someone.
- Kill someone off.
Please, just tell great stories, with lots of pew pews and gold bikinis.
On another note, while Rian killed off Luke - he did it in such an amazing and unexpected way. Only when we see Luke fade, was when I realised what was happening. A sad but amazing moment.
I fucking love Rian for what he did with some of these aspects.

I have a load of respect for Rian doing what he did. He made choices in this movie not to be popular or do what he thinks everyone wanted him to do. He made these choices for the purposes of amazing story telling and challenging not only his audience, but the characters within his story.

The sad thing is that a good portion of the audience don't like to be challenged. They want an easy story.

That's the most arrogant thing I've read in this thread.stip wrote:No one is arguing with your opinions. We are arguing with your apparent fundamental misunderstanding of the textVinylGuy wrote:Joe is getting anxious with all these opinions.

And it's competing with a lot like this:
