Yeah, his handling of Luke's passing was expert. It was completely satisfying in every way. Those that wanted the most powerful Jedi ever, got it. Those that wanted quiet reflection, got it. Those that wanted an epic battle, to see him light up a saber and go after it, they got it too. It was outstanding.
What did I want from Luke? To be powerful? Yes. Quiet reflection? Yes, if executed right. Epic battle with a lightsaber? Absolutely. Don't really think we got any of it. Then he died.
These discussions are really difficult because there seems to be this disconnect between objectivity and subjectivity. I get that people didn't like things about the movie. There's plenty that I don't like. So that's not the issue. But it's impossible to have a conversation when people just refuse to acknowledge facts. Not how the events made one feel, but the fact of the event itself.
You can hate that Han was frozen in carbonite. But you can't argue that he was, in fact, frozen in carbonite. You may not like how Luke's power was manifested but he absolutely was powerful. You can say you don't like the way the battle scene was handled. But you can't say there was no battle.
I understand what you are saying, but until the last scene he wasn't even using the force at all. Then in the battle he's a projection. It's incredible of course. Can't argue with that. But to me it says very little about how powerful he is, or how he would do in a battle.
Luke using a Force power that we've never seen anyone use before, a power that literally kills him because it's so difficult and taxing doesn't say a lot to you about how powerful Luke has become?
Again, I don't know how to have this conversation.
If the moment didn't work for you that's fine (well it's too bad, but that's subjective). But you understand what is happening in that scene, right? Even if it didn't land for you. You understand what Joey and Sarge laid out? Because the way some of these conversations have gone (not just or even primarily with you) it seems like that is not the case. There is a difference between saying I don't care about Poe's arc and denying that it exists.

I don't quite agree with your conclusion, but what he did was impressive. Interesting? Not really. A good way for Luke to go? Not at all.
That moment when luke is sitting n the dark and R2 wakes up and he goes R2??
So many feels. They had to have lifted that audio from the OT. It sounds like young excited Luke Skywalker. And that entire scene of them is just powerful

Did anyone else see the dot in the sun right before Luke died? I thought for sure that somehow they found Luke and were sending a bunch of fighters to kill him - a la empire of the sun - but then it was nothing.
Also: Here's that list of movies that Rian said he made everyone watch before filming.
Twelve O'Clock High was a big touchstone, for the feel and look of the aerial combat as well as the dynamic between the pilots. Three Outlaw Samurai for the feel of the sword-fighting, and the general sense of pulpy fun. And To Catch A Thief was a great film to rewatch, for the romantic scale and grandeur.

yeah, i see what the movie went for. I didnt like the tone of parody. I didnt like the so called ¨arcs¨ for Finn and Poe. I can see the point of ¨ this is a middle chapter¨. thats ok. But for the movie itself, they didnt resolve anything.
Again, i feel what they did with Poe was only to keep the audience interested in whatever Laura Dern was doing.
But of course we disagree and thats ok with me guys!!

JJ said a while back that when he saw the script for the last Jedi, he wished he was directing it.
They’re definitely collaborating. Were they always collaborating is the tastier question.

Rian started writing TLJ off of JJ's TFA script. Rian was writing as they were filming. We've all heard the story by now of Rian asking JJ to swap out BB8 for R2 at the end. I'm not sure how much they talked to each other during TLJ but I imagine they've been in contact.

I have a long education, and even a degree in media and communication. I've made a short movie as part of my student years. I have seen at least 5000 movies. I'm a lifelong Star Wars fan. I'm a positive person, that even found good things about all the prequels. I read a lot, all in English, including sci-fi and fantasy in my spare time. All of you can probably say the same, or better. It's not a competition. But let's not pretend that those who didn't like it, just couldn't understand it.

Again, this boils down to misunderstanding. Neither Stip nor myself are trying to say that the people who didn't like it didn't understand it. At this point we're all just talking past each other. It's impossible to have a conversation this way.
