It's not that crazy of a theory really. Something very similar already happened in the old (now defunct) EU. And, as you said, it isn't all that far removed from some of the bonkers shit Rian came up with. Add to that, we know that the original version of TFA script, you know, the one with more of Lucas's involvement, the one everyone loves all of a sudden since dime posted that link because it's WAY better than what we got in TLJ, well, in that script, Luke's severed hand was seen floating through space. Ultimately, I don't think they'll go that route. But it's not completely out of the question.
