Batman vs Superman was also met with mixed and critical responses, it’s no ESB though.

BVS already has a big cult following that will only grow throughout the years. Zack Snyder will be heralded as a misunderstood auteur in 50 years, mark my words.

I actually thought it was a decent movie, was surprised at how fierce the criticism was.

I’ve never read or seen a serious cold honest critical analysis of Star Wars or any film in the ot. Just an honest take. Not a hatchett job from a grumpy journo. A real take.

Honestly nonsense. Ebert and siskel both have flip flopped and changed their view in almost every single Star Wars film. They’re known for it.

This seems to have been written in 1977, and it’s a really good piece. Either way if you can’t see why the 1977 movie is nearly flawless, I won’t be able to convince you. The fact that you can see it 40 years later, and it still has the greatest emotional impact is amazing. In that it is like the other greatest classics of film, a short list.

You clearly know a lot about SW. You approach it as a SW fan. I know a lot about movies and don’t care about SW as a property. We approach these movies from what I would consider opposing angles, so we’re never going to see eye to eye. We see different things in them and want different things from them.

To Dime's point (I like the Achtung analogy) all three Star Wars movies were met with mixed responses when they first came out. Their appreciation has grown in time until they became cultural touchstones for two generations. RT or some other group has gone back to aggregate and measure the release reviews and I think Empire had something like a 67%. Decent, but not what it became.


History will be on TLJ's side, I think. And perhaps you'll some day be right about BvS or the Transformers, LV. The arc of history is long, but it bends towards justice

I thought the Ren, Snoke, Rey throne room scene was awesome, edge of your seat stuff. Reminds me of the last 10 min of the rebels escaping Vader in Rogue One in terms of intensity.

Still, my favorite all-time SW scene is probably the music, singing kicking in during the Luke/Vader fight in Jedi.

Agree with LV. The smartest thing JJ did was remaking ep 4, the worst thing he did was doing it with less soul and with the stupid Starkiller Base. The new movies just haven’t captured the spirit of the OT.

The original has far less emotional impact for me than any of the three misty recent films. The first one is pretty ridiculous, all told. I enjoy it because of the nostalgia and what it launched. But it's a pretty bad movie as far as movie making goes.
