Both plausible conclusions. Another thought is that she unintentionally pulled viewers out of the movie ("ahhh, why is Laura Dern in space?") so they'd forget about that slug's pace space chase.

A) They were never going to kill Leia off.

B) Absurd. Carrie was fine. And they weren't going to change anything between 8 & 9. Ep 9 was to be Carrie's movie. She wasn't in a coma for "most of" 8. Holdo isn't an idiot at all. Have you ever not been the person in charge of a military project?
