Just saw it for the third time this evening. It works more and more every time I see it. Luke’s fate mists me up every time.

I liked this movie quite a bit overall. The strongest parts by far were every scene with Rey and Kylo Ren, who is turning into an incredible fucking character. I am going to have to watch some more Adam Driver performances because he is absolutely destroying this role. The light-speed destruction in total silence was gorgeous, and the visual touch of the red crystal planet (and that red throne room) were both really great. I like the overall direction of knocking away the rituals and the tropes of previous movies like training sequences et. al.

I am with LV a bit in that Star Wars fans have become UNBEARABLE with their always wanting to change the story and make it exactly what they want. That's not how art works. People make things and you take them as they are. Constantly thinking about how you'd change something or how it's not good enough ruins the experience completely. Obviously we all like to do it and engaging in a little armchair writing/directing is fun, but people need to learn to knock this shit off. It's getting ridiculous and this has been its absolute nadir.

I liked some of the goofy stuff in the first half (Luke drinking green milk from an alien tit, sad porg face, etc.), and the Snoke death was pretty shocking, but they course-correct everything in the final act, which is a dull flurry of safe, bland choices.

Adam Driver, though. Holy shit. He is stellar. And he is endlessly compelling in this role. I could watch him all day. His physicality, his delivery - just spellbinding. And he seethed so much brooding sexuality that it made it all the more disappointing when Rey didn’t go with him in that crucial moment. What a letdown.

Also, Benicio Del Toro. Oh my god. He lights up the screen every second he’s on it. Too bad he’s paired with Boyega and that GODAWFUL Rose girl. Yikes. They are both so bad. As is Laura Dern in her curtain and horrific purple hair.

Whoever thought it was a good idea to wheel Carrie Fisher out of her nursing home and prop her up so she could wheeze her way through her lines ought to be ashamed of themself.

Isaac is kinda wasted. Most of the Luke stuff is a bore. And, again, the whole final act lands with a wet thud.

Overall: Meh. Better than TFA, but worse than any other SW movie.

it was a character driven post lacking in any truly memorable cinematic sequences, and thus, ultimately forgettable.
