Brandon Boyd is shitting on music tradition

Post by harmless »

What the fuck is this shit? First 'If Not Now, When?' (to which I reply 'Never, idiot') and now this? Is he just joking? Is this some elaborate joke? Or maybe it's been gradual nervous breakdown now manifest in his music?

Discuss, I guess.

This is the worst explanation I could have had.

http://abcnewsradioonline.com/music-new ... e-sea.html

"Last month, Incubus frontman Brandon Boyd released a new EP under the moniker Sons of the Sea. The singer says that the new side project came together after longtime Incubus producer Brendan O'Brien approached him about writing some songs together.

“I’d never written music with anybody else other than my band and so it was an enticing and kind of exciting proposition,” Boyd tells Billboard in a video interview.

The singer notes that the duo worked together over the next six months to craft what would eventually be the Sons of the Sea debut EP, Compass. “Every song was different from the next one,” says Boyd. “It was really like this process of continual discovery in the studio.”

Boyd adds that his collaboration with O’Brien won’t end with Compass: the duo have completed recording a full-length debut album for Sons of the Sea, which will be released sometime in the fall. In addition, Boyd says he’s "in the process of putting a small band together" so that he can promote the release with a string of tour dates."

So between Brandon Boyd and Pearl Jam, Brendan O'Brien has all the opportunities to make a twat out of himself that he could ask for.

I suppose it is abundantly clear that between PJ, Springsteen and Brandon here all abandoning their historical styles and variance in their music for an Adult Contemporary aligned approach, the main constant is Brendan O'Brien.

This is better than any Incubus song I've ever heard.

That album made me angry and confused. This one just made me laugh hard. I don't know what he's trying to pull.

I couldn't listen past the first one. It just makes me horribly depressed to think that there are artists without a backbone, yes men, agreeing to collaborate with Brendan O'Brien on his vanity projects that he's always promised himself he'd make before he died, even though he has zero conceptual talent. Oh god I just can't think about it.

It's not enough to be able to play instruments. You also have to understand that musical part X does not go with musical part B, and that this instrumental part you speak of can never be allowed to happen.

I found the first one really enjoyable. You're acting like there's something fundamentally wrong with it, from a compositional standpoint or something. It's not "shitting on music tradition", it's just a song you don't like. Like I said, I'd take it over every single Incubus song I've ever heard. Pardon me, pardon me.

The worst of Light Grenades was dull. I can do dull. But some of this stuff is conceptually impossible to explain except, well, Brendan O'Brien. I bet this guy goes to a really cheesy church very regularly.

It's just very strange. Very, very strange indeed. From a compositional standpoint it's fascinating, but so is a heap of dung under a microscope.

It strikes me as very conventional :? Do you mean "fascinating" and "strange" in the context of Incubus?

Yes. I do. It's very leftfield for them and absolutely nothing attached to the expectations they've set up. I do mean more than that though; in most 'popular music' you can hear at least some of what may have influenced them. This sounds to me like an alien has been given some instruments and a few CDs and made a song in the best way he knows how, in the few hours he's been given. This alien is proficient at playing instruments and singing but I can't put his ideas in any context.

I can't think of any life context where this EP would be enjoyable.

Light Grenades could have been a good EP. Some strong songs and a lot of filler...but like you say, i can take dull over this thing or the last album from Incubus.
