I think, with this and the last revival, The X-Files only big problem right now is Chris Carter. Which is kind of a big problem to have. I'm one of the few that defends the second movie, though it has problems, but this episode was all over the place. It kind of goes back to what I was saying yesterday; there's so much fertile material now (imagine a mythology leaning more into the NSA/global surveillance thing, maybe with the use of alien technology as they hinted at in the last season). The route they're taking seems comparatively tired.

I don't think they really have time to spread out into those areas too much though. If Anderson is really done you have to think this is it and they plan on putting the storyline to bed somehow. The only thing that really disappoints me about this direction is it really marginalizes any alien contact/invasion and makes CSM the ultimate boogie man.

I don't know; I think simplifying the mytharc to a degree would probably made the storytelling more straightforward. The whole focus on William, it just kind of becomes a snake eating its tail, coupled with that ridiculous and leaden ending twist. I'm usually pretty sanguine on X-Files, willing to see what they're going for even if they don't quite hit it, but I think that was just a complete mess.

I'm glad that one is over; I thought it was entangled and scattershot as well. On to the monsters of the week!

I must of missed something at the beginning. Did they fully, explicitly explain the full-on retcon of last season? I was having TV issues at the start. Or are we just supposed to figure it out on our own?

Also, Chris Carter should never direct.

It's nice to know CSM can still get it up at least.

I'm not sure how he's smoking regularly now. I thought he had a hole in his throat?

That seems to be part of the thing they were retconning from last season.

It will be interesting to see how turning Skinner back into the boss they don't know if they can trust works. Total good guy Skinner was starting to become a flat character.

The newest episode was a fucking mess, reminded me that this show fucking sucks when it's trying to cobble together a coherent "plot".

This describes it pretty well:
A mess. It's so convoluted now. So much backtracking and retconning. They all flow like the mad ramblings of person in the midst of a fever dream speaking in tongues where they're trying to pile 13-15 years worth of conspiracy theories and pop culture references into an hour.

This season's premiere was, yeesh. Something. Last year I wrote that it's "as if the showrunners thought what people liked about TXF were exposition-y conversations between Mulder and the CSM." All they did this time was add a car chase. And just how much of last season was a vision? Just the final episode, or the other mythology episodes, too? I am hoping this is the low-water mark for the season. Looking forward to the MOTW episodes.

It's pretty generous calling those 18 minutes of Mulder driving around and changing lanes a car "chase."

I'll have to watch again, but I'm pretty sure they were using their blinkers.

I am a legit X-Files fanboi and (let's be honest; apologist) and even I hated almost everything about this season's premier except the acting of the Smoking Man and Scully. I can bright side the shit out of anything but this episode was awful.

I kinda love how Scully can't move her face anymore or form expression on it.
