I don't think they're particularly good at those kind of songs. They usually do atmospherics on songs that would be weak otherwise as a way to make them interesting. Inside Job could be considered as an atmospheric number by their standards without being a trick to fix a song but it really doesn't work very well.LetMeSleep wrote:I'm excited for LB as I hope that the 3 most immediate tracks have been heard and that the remaining 9 tracks will have a depth not seen/heard for nearly a decade.
But it appears to me that the band aren't willing/prepared to go to the places I want them to. I can't see a SoH, NAIS or You Are sitting next to LB or MYM.

Maybe FD will close the album. I dislike the transition from Johnny Guitar into JB but others don't seem to mind. JB has always stood out in a jarring way for me. When I got BS I listened to it as a whole for months, resisting retracking it but eventually I caved. But I like BS and still occasionally have a play. My hopes for LB are for the same.harmless wrote:I wouldn't listen to PJ to justify posting here, I'd just post here.broken iris wrote:Thank you for not resorting to standard RM "I only ever listen to PJ so I can justify still posting here" judgement.harmless wrote:The instrumental music on the tour vid, and the murky soundchecked song, could be any of those. I don't get it. You're saying PJ use atmospherics as a gimmick but then saying Inside Job was more, but that it just didn't match up? To be fair, a lot of songs with atmospherics, even the best ones, could be made much plainer and more boring by taking the atmospherics away. Especially if they're just fairly standard structurally.Mine wrote:I don't think they're particularly good at those kind of songs. Re: General Pearl Jam Bitching
I would be happy for FD to close the album, because I think an album closer can afford to be tonally different than the rest of the album. I don't mind Johnny Guitar into Just Breathe. But I don't like the transition from whatever precedes Parachutes. I think Backspacer is a pretty consistent listen, so in terms of playing it back to back, the same again would be fine. But I'd like some of the songs to have more substance. I can't say any of the songs on Backspacer were more than very good. I want a few to be great this time.LetMeSleep wrote:Maybe FD will close the album. I dislike the transition from Johnny Guitar into JB but others don't seem to mind. I think Inside Job was written as an atmospheric song while say NAIS wasn't. You don't need to go further than the intro to see evidence on that. It doesn't use any particular effects to achieve that but it drags and eventually goes nowhere. It's not an effect heavy atmospheric song. I do think they used atmospheric as a gimmick and this is how i always perceived those songs. It makes sense to me when compared to the rest of their catalogue. It's almost like something they have fun with once in a while.

I'm listening to 'All or None', thinking how ironic it is that the last song on the last great album was called 'All or None', but for the rest of their career I've been settling for 'some'.

I adore All Or None. Just stunning delivery and great work from all.
And only Marker, Parachutes and Army Reserve come close (but not exceeding) the quality of All Or None.

Come Back is so much more bland. The others are good but none of them approach All or None, which is packed with atmosphere, but I can understand that it's not the type of atmosphere you like.
