I don't understand why they do that. They're no stronger, and if anything their physical movement would be restricted. Plus, everyone knows at first glance they are fake.

I suppose it's no different to breast implants. But sometimes those can be more believable.

I'm thinking that once a particular society reaches the point where its citizen's basic needs are met and they generally live in comfort (if not luxury) there is some subconscious urge to destroy ourselves and start over.

Piercings, body mutilations, tattoos... all this peacockery is surely a sign that we've peaked.
