It's the songwriting that i think they're trying to recreate rather than certain songs. I think at least part of the band identifies in 10,Vs,Yield,s/t their sound.digster wrote:Not sure I buy that either. Yield is not much like Vs. at all.
The only time they've really sold the "we're going back to rocking" was S/T, and even that was a little more complicated than that. If they've ever tried to emulate a prior sound, they've never really done it successfully.
In general, I don't think the problem with Backspacer is that they're trying to remake a certain album from their past. The problem's in the songwriting.

Re: Lightning Bolt - October 15
I agree i don't think they ever really try anything in advance when it comes to album directions. My opinion is relative though. Have there not been Vitalogy and No Code i wouldn't have drawn that conclusion.harmless wrote:I agree. During my first few listens to GTF I definitely got the sense that they were trying to recreate the epic anthem again. It felt slightly awkward at the time. Which is why, ironically, I don't really buy those arguments now. Whenever someone says 'PJ are just trying to...', I reject the opinion and decide what I think for myself. I think ATW works for what its aim is, for example. Could they make another GTF? No, they couldn't, and they know that. So they made ATW instead. *shrug* If they wanted to make an anthem with the quality of GTF again, they would have to do it very differently and nobody would think it sounded like GTF.Mine wrote:I think it's the same in all of Europe. But casual fans are usually people who now Pearl Jam as part of grunge rather than people who have any interest in the band per se and those are somehow supposed to hate everything post 10.harmless wrote:Oh, I agree with that. But that's helped by the casual fans' constantly talking about 10. For most people in the UK, you mention Pearl Jam and 10 is the only album they remember. I hope PJ aren't as idiotic as to think that this suggests anything but that the general public are idiots with short-term memory problems, but I'm not sure.Mine wrote:About 10... sticking musically to what 10 is would have shrunk their fanbase far more than No Code in theory did. They shouldn't be thinking of 10 as the artistic highlight of their career and they seem to.harmless wrote:Well, I think our fandom is largely to do with Ten as well, but yeah, we were totally on board until Riot Act (give or take a few for that album), so we obviously felt they were doing something very right over the course of those first seven albums. I guess plenty liked S/T as well, even if not on this board. I would say well, Backspacer is one album, but I think we've somehow gained the sense that Backspacer was more than just the one album experimentation, and that this album was somehow an attempt to redefine what the band was about in a wider sense. And it's a big collective WTF. I'm not sure what happened. I try to enjoy what I can now, but man, I would be on top of the world if they suddenly realised one day that they should carry on where Riot Act or S/T left off. Will Lightning Bolt be that album? Possibly. Will it be what Backspacer should've been? I hope so.Mine wrote:they should realise that they still have a fanbase that affords them to headline festivals around the world and sell dog collars is thanks to what they did on Vitalogy and No Code rather than what they did on 10. This is in my opinion their main problem in evaluating their work. Their fanbase is a s large because of people who liked how they were developing and they still don't have a clue.harmless wrote:I think everyone always had a different idea of what 'good Pear Jam' was, and that's part of the problem. You can't possibly be in a band as diverse as this, and then later on settle on one direction (no pun intended) that everyone is going to be happy with. That's what they've tried, and it's made them jacks of all trades, masters of none.fishbob wrote:I don't think Pearl Jam knows what good Pearl Jam is anymore, and that scares me. I think they're having a mid-life crisis.
Judging by their setlists (and i don't mind them or any other band playing the hits), PJ20 and Amongst The Waves I'm not sure what to think. I think Yield is an indication of trying to revert back not necessary to 10 but Vs. definitely.

You're naming some albums that sound quite different from each other there, IMO.
I may be misreading the point here, but I'll go back to what I said before; I don't really hear much of their old sound in their newer work. S/T in maybe a few songs, but even then it's a pretty far trip between Porch and Jeremy and Worldwide Suicide and Comatose. And Backspacer couldn't be further, in some respects, from their earliest work, in temperament, song structure, and melodic and lyrical style.
I think Backspacer may be just be a dual combo of a lack of inspiration and PJ attempting to write kinds of songs that they may just not be adept at.

One thing we've never we've never been privy to is how much the band will conceptualize the albums going into recording. We make it sound like they intend to make a heavier, darker, poppier album, but really they just write a bunch of songs and see what falls out.

I think they probably did the former for S/T, hated it, so decided on the latter for Backspacer. It looks like they've decided on that 'throw it all in and pare it down' for this one. I'm not against that approach at all. It would be quite cool, even punk, if the songs matched up.southp wrote:One thing we've never we've never been privy to is how much the band will conceptualize the albums going into recording. You think they hate S/T? Given that they still play a lot of those songs live I wouldn't think so.
Or they hated the process of trying to make a hard rock album?

I don't think they hate it all. They loved it. Read any of their quotes about that album. But, I do think the process was definitely stressful as I believe most of the songs were written together. Ed, at least, talked about the difficulties in that process. But, the end result was something they were definitely proud of.southp wrote:You think they hate S/T? No I mean they hated the experience of recording it. Ed's said as much himself; he had so many versions of songs it felt like homework.southp wrote:You think they hate S/T? Given that they still play a lot of those songs live I wouldn't think so.

Maybe Ed needs to realize that "the struggle" is what makes their albums good.

Yeah that's pretty funny. I bet it was Ed or stone slowing shit down. I really want to know what happened there.

. And of all the ways to describe siren(s) i didn't want Paaahhhhppp to be one of them.
If anyone could possibly be labeled the sixth member of Pearl Jam, it would be Brendan O'Brien.
Paging Harmless
Give me some descriptors asshat, 'longer' doesnt countHow does the sound of this record compare to the previous one?
I'm terrible at stuff like that. The way I've always kind of recorded records and made records is that we shut up and the songs dictate how it's going to sound. We don't really think about it that much. There's not a lot of pretense about it. So I don't know that they sound that much . . . we kind of recorded in the same fashion.
But I guess there are a few longer, more devoted songs. On Backspacer I really love that all the songs were fairly short. I love that about it. They were all "get in, get out fast." This record has a few songs that have a bit more of a . . . they kind of . . . what's the word I'm looking for here? They're longer. [Laughs] I don't know if the word "depth" is right, but some of the songs kind of take you down a road for a while.
There's a song called "Siren" that I think is one of the best songs on the record. That clocks in around five minutes, which is long pop song. It really works out. A song called "Infallible" – at least that's what I believe it's called – is also a little more developed that way.
I'll leave it to the guys in the band to describe what the songs are about and that kind of stuff. But as far as sonically, the way it sounds different, I don't know. You'll have to tell me.

I don't think BO'B has anything other than 'pop' in his vocabulary. I'm sure if it's catchy in any way, it'll be labelled 'pop'. I wouldn't worry too much about that.

Re: Lightning Bolt - October 15
There's a real frustrating irony that BO'B wants this band to arrive with 'finished songs' so that they're not faffing around in the studio, but then he'll faff around rearranging them to suit his own taste.
