I love this song. And the thing that irritates me the most is when I have to say about new songs like MYM, "after 10 or 12 listens, this is growing on me, I like it now". Not with Cold Confession, loved it after 1 listen. That's how I like my Pearl Jam.

I've felt like this before, but ultimately I've not kept it as an argument. I personally think that you have to see your 'instant like' of this song against the context of your relative dislike of neo-PJ. They generally don't make songs like this anymore, and you prefer this style to the style of Backspacer, so you instantly make comparisons. But (and I'm only speaking for myself) I've so often heard new PJ and thought 'What? I wish they still sounded like...'. I've been doing that throughout their entire career. PJ have always written songs that needed to grow on me. So if they do now, I might see it as frustrating initially but if I really challenge myself to look back over my feelings about Yield, Binaural or Riot Act, I have to admit that everything on those albums took time to like, and nothing much has changed. They surprise us, we say WTF, and a couple of years later, some of the new stuff has grown or hasn't grown. Every album is like this.

My own best example of this is Do The Evolution. It was not love at first sight (sound?). But now I'll never let her go.

I still prefer the version on LOTL. Jack played it too straight.

It would have been cool to hear a studio version with Matt. That's probably the only Jack-era PJ song that I think Matt plays better.

I might go with that as well, yup.

I hate the bass pedal work Matt did on most of those early versions. Don't recall the LO2L version off the top of my head.
There's the dog. You can't fake that stuff. Confess with your mouth.

It's a different Matt on LO2L I'm telling you. He plays GTF at the right tempo...

Guys, that's the song Jack uses the trash can lid in. I'm not happy about this talk at all.

I love the album version, but it's the LO2L version that cemented my love for the track. LO2L is tops. I fucking love that little album. I'm gonna shower, make some coffee and throw that fucker on.

You can hear it quite clearly. It's overdubbed on the studio version and fades in and out of certain parts, but on SVT he plays it exclusively as a cymbal and he did so during the Australian/NZ/Hawaii 98 tour.

It's funny how your brain blocks something out if you have no idea it's there... and I don't remember SVT. I'll have a listen later on. It's still not my favourite in terms of drumming style.

Were it not for SVT, would you ever know he's playing a trashcan lid?

I'm not sure that's where I found out about it. But listening to the studio version - I wouldn't be able to tell that's what it was, no. But I'd probably be thinking "what's that fucking cool clicking noise that keeps fading in and out?" It's such an unusual part for him to try it on but works so well for some reason.

Yeah, I think I like just knowing he did that. Jack was awesome for the band.

The studio version of DTE is amazing. I'd go as far as to say it's one of their best. A big part of that is Jack's work on it.
