Am watching this now. The visual design is spectacular but the leads have no chemistry, and the dialogue and acting is terrible. It's kind of a boring movie. It does make me want to watch the fifth element though

Rewatching this.
Man I love it. But the male lead is like that annoying kid at school who thought he was cool cos he drank cough medicine to get high. He can’t act. He’s insufferable.

Other than that it’s a wonderful film.

I was watching Guardians with my kids the other night and struck by the similarities in the sesthetic sensibilities of that movie and Luc Besson’s style. i wonder if James Gunn cited 5th Element as an influence?

You think? I really don’t see much similarity. What about them seem similar to you?

The ship design in particular, with their soft edges and less angular features. Some of the coloring (the bright oranges all over that movie(). I'm thinking of the Kiln and Knowwhere in particular, but that sequence on Zandar where Peter is trying to sell the orb to that antiques collector also feels like something you'd find in one of Besson's sci-fi movies.

The Rhianna scenes are some of the best things ever.

The very very on the nose joke about her getting hit made me chuckle.
