If anything The Last Jedi frees up episode 9 to be whatever the director wants it to be. So many of the story arcs from the force awakens are closed and the story lines that are not closed have a ton of room and space to grow.

Luke has trained Leia. She’s been trained enough to reach out and sense different peoples thoughts and emotions. And sense their presence. Also well enough to be able to sense Luke anytime and from across the galaxy. She senses ‘when he was betrayed’ and he was like a storm in the force(this presumably about Bens turning). Then he was suddenly gone and she hasn’t been able to reach him in years.
There’s always more room in the books and this is being sold as an expanded version of the story. It’s awesome so far. Extended stuff with Luke and Rey particularly.
while Kylo was rummaging around in Reys mind in TFA she could also enter his. His dreams are haunted by the ghost of Darth Vader. So it’s a safe bet Snoke has been fucking with his mind all along.

I agree, but I don't think Luke training Leia a bit is too much of a mental stretch.

Nah it's not, but there could have been a small scene that alluded to this at least instead of Leia suddenly being so strong in the force
