Boys sometimes just rock out and write about fancying their best friend's mother. Ten is full of horribly overwrought emotion, it's just a different kind of emotion than Yield.

Is this about what kind of songs bro's can enjoy? Rocking out and avoiding emotion? I guess I thought the fanbase was a little beyond that by now...
But did you click the spoiler? That was quality. The rest of it I can give or take. I was never a teacher of 11 year olds.
Haha, no I didn't initially. Just did.

GTF is about being free when everybody wants to pin you down. Its not the new testament that rhimes.
Yup. Is that not what the silhouetted Ed / surf board symbol was about that we got? The one where his arms are outstretched, like on a cross? I don't know, it's a bit like Bono's 'I am Jesus' but much more stylish. He definitely sees surfing as a spiritual, transcendent experience. He's basically rejected GOP-style Christianity and replaced it with surfing.
He's doing that in both songs sure, it just works better, and comes of slightly less cheesy in GTF. A combination of the lyrics and the music i guess. ATW just sounds like every joke we make about ed being a giant hippy surfer rolled into one song. If it wasn't already a song, and the title popped up on a fake tracklist i'd be calling bullshit.
How did you feel about Big Wave? Be careful how you answer.
I like big wave! The music helps. It's a rawking party song, "wwooooo, waaveess, i love surfing, wooo" rather than, " surfing, like, saved, my soul, like...suuurrrffinngggggg.....yeah"

I've never been surfing, but i can sing along to GOTMEABIGWAVEGOTMEABIGWAVEGOTMEABIGWAAAVVEEE.

Part of my disdain for ATW probably comes from the fact that we already have Big Wave and a zillion other ocean/surfing songs/references. I get it ed,you love to surf.Plus, i just plain don't like how it sounds, really.

Pretty's not a problem.

Overdone and uninterestingly applied is.

I actually think that AtW has some of the better lyrics on Backspacer....in the verses. It's mostly the choruses and the extremity of the retreading that make it suck hard.

There's something sexual about that last sentence. But anyway, yes, I don't think the choruses are quite as substantial as the verses. But I think that about a lot of PJ songs. They should be turning more verses and bridges into choruses.

They should attempt a mash-up, title it "Amongst the Big Waves".

A pop punk version of ATW is actually not hard to imagine.

They should keep the music and melody of ATW and change every word to either 'Big' or 'Wave'

Yet another example of me being an outlier hear, I love Big Wave. I play it 10 times in a row when it comes on.

That song must've took work, it shows to me, and in a good way. Matt's drumming is really cool there, he's doing a few subtle stutter step things that keep me coming back. And Ed's doing a good job on the melody. To come up with crisp, pointed lyrics that hit, show a brief progression of notes and be brought back to something familiar using rhymes, and done really fast at a high BPM is awesome. Sounds fun and tossed off and there's no let up in the song, and moves like a train. A nice break in the album before Gone which is sometimes a little droney depending on my mood. I dig it and always have.

I like Big Wave. The music is great. The lyrics are silly but I can ignore them.

Neither do I. They're my least favourite albums, but Big Wave is the only song ruining S/T (along with production and track ordering issues). The only song I hate on Backspacer is Supersonic, and Backspacer is affected by my hatred of that song simply because it's so short.
