Pretty much every movie that isn't in Spanish, in English, or silent.

I like subtitles, no matter the language that is spoken. I prefer using the same language as the movie is in. So Norwegian subtitles for a Scandinavian movie, English for an English movie.

Why? They clutter up the screen

I don't like anything drawing attention away from the composition, though it's inevitable for movies in languages I don't speak

I think it makes the brain work harder on the meaning of the words. Sort of like reading a book. It enchances the product. Words are very important. Often in music, lyrics are more important than the sound of the instruments. In a graphic novel, it is the words that make me laugh or react, while the pictures are just something extra. In a movie as well, what is said, is more important than if it is cgi or with lots of color, or expensive sets/cinematography.

Well, if I don't understand the language, and it isn't something purely vivid in style, then I will only enjoy the movie if it has subtitles.

But you already get what is said... you hear it.

I don't think this has ever been the case for me.

If I both hear it and read it, it enriches the overall product.

I had an English-born professor in English literature at the University that said the same thing. When he grew up in England he naturally never had any subtitles, but once he had lived in Norway a few years, he now used them even when watching English movies at home. It added an extra layer to the movie for him.

I get this. Actors make choices. When you read the text it's easier to consider how it might be different.

Fair enough. Even if I watch a Japanese movie, I can enjoy it just as much as a movie from my native tongue. You do lose the hearing the words part, but at the same time that gives it something else. You can't even look away for a second. If you are going to pay attention, you must have your eyes fixed on the screen.
