I must say, though, I love Bloodborne and think it is brilliant on many levels. I just started playing it again recently before realizing I can't handle its power... feels like a nightmare.

so you guys weren't kidding about Bloodborne being brutally hard. I played for a couple hours yesterday and died at least 30 times. That first werewolf that you encounter got me at least 10 times before i went online for help and learned that you're supposed to stay in that hunters dream area after you die the first time and collect some weapons . Even at that it still took me a few tries to kill that sumbitch.

If you're set on completing this game and not willing to keep trial-and-erroring, by which I mean you're gonna die a million times, I recommend you get some more advice from the internet on your play-through. I've actually never beaten this game.. I think I made it a little over half way through and checked out some youtube videos on what's to come and figured it just isn't worth the stress. I play games for fun these days.

I get that. I've never finished a Dark Souls game for this reason, but Bloodborne just clickes. MF, you don't have to kill every enemy. You can run from the smaller minions to get items and to get to the next lamp. What weapon did you choose?

i don't have a ton of time for gaming these days so i've got no problem using walkthroughs.

i chose the axe and the pistol. i'm still in one of the first sections Yharnham, with a mob and a big bonfire thing. I usually get killed when I try to attack anybody near the bonfire. My time yesterday was spent mostly just getting familiar with the controls and combat so i was ok with dying and repeating the same area over and over. But it's good to know that you can strategically avoid some enemies, i wasn't sure if you had to kill them all or not.

You don't really have to strategically avoid them... you just flail your arms and run past nearly everyone if you know where you're going.

I disagree with tree_. Spoiling too much of the Souls/Bloodborne games with walkthroughs will diminish the reward of beating them significantly. Most of the charm lies in the cryptic ridiculousness. That sounds like pedantic gatekeeping, but it's true.

I agree. Only consult a walkthrough if you've really hit a wall. Discovering the various pathways/shortcuts and boss strategies organically is so incredibly rewarding.

What do you mean by stress? Difficulty of boss battles, or dead ends and a reluctance to backtrack for the umpteenth time? Boss fights are just pattern recognition. They're fucking hard as hell but I don't see how the internet can help you with that, unless you used guides to find overpowered gear - which is weaksauce.

The nightmare aesthetic is engrossing. It doesn't feel like a good time. I just want the sun to come out. Also, I take my time killing nearly every enemy so I can collect enough blood echoes to upgrade and make bosses less daunting and there's a constant fear of losing all my echoes before I can return to the dream... and you can't pause it... Yeah, boss battles are f'n hard. There are youtube videos describing the best strategies for beating them, which is the only help I ever sought. I looked ahead to the upcoming bosses and was like... no thanks. I'll play Splatoon 2.

I usually just watch horror games on youtube since there's no way I could actually sit through playing them. Bloodborne is really cool and I liked watching it but I know I would hate playing it.

I can definitely see the emotional disconnect between the subject matter and our real world causing some problems. But I think this could turn out to be a dark, weird, gonzo take on our culture, even if the NPCs have very short attention spans.

Anyway, I'll monkey around with it this evening to refresh my memory, then will be game to do some co-op this week if anyone's up for it.

I can't remember a single thing about the story from Far Cry 4 to be honest and I rarely skip cutscenes. I think storytelling in open world games has a long way to go in general. The more freedom you give a player the harder it is to tell a compelling story with good pacing and impactful decisions.

Bloodborne's DLC is more difficult than I remember. Still very enjoyable.
