The official PJ site literally just grabbed lyrics from fansites and rehosted them. They're full of errors.LoathedVermin72 wrote:Even though it's on the official PJ site?theplatypus wrote:He's not actually saying "Eddie is in his home", those are misheard lyrics somebody transcribed. On Black, he was just as earnest, except what was on his mind was obliviously self-serious angst.

I admit that this is not something that resonates with me since it's not something I have experienced in my adult life. I also admit that my sympathy (or lack thereof) around it has been colored by how gross and entitled a lot of dudes are about it.Strat wrote:YES.LoathedVermin72 wrote:Because I don't respond to teenage breakup songs?Strat wrote:LV is clearly dead inside.
Still, I think it's rare for there to be any kind of insightful or unique riff on the theme. Black certainly isn't. Simply venting transient pain in a banal way is not interesting or moving to me at all.

EV was always very heart on sleeve and that is what separated him from many of the other Grunge icons at the time. It was super endearing and it made a mark on many of us growing up.LoathedVermin72 wrote:I admit that this is not something that resonates with me since it's not something I have experienced in my adult life. There doesnt have to be some hot new take on an experience that is as old as time. I love the song more for the overall visceral element of the material than any one thing in particular. I do love Stones choice of chord voicing int he verse, Mikes strange use of Hendrix like double stop guitar moves, the way stone skips an Em and heads back to D to lead into one might feel is the outro, and the emotional climax of the song. Love the vocal delivery and ed sounds like a gem.

Oh, it's a fine song musically. But the lyrics and Ed's delivery of them kill it for me these days.Strat wrote:EV was always very heart on sleeve and that is what separated him from many of the other Grunge icons at the time. There's not very much insightful in In My Tree either, from a lyrical perspective. Especially compared to Sometimes, Red Mosquito, and especially Hail Hail

Eddie is at his best as both a performer and a writer when he is being empathetic rather than insightful. And the performance in Black is really powerful in that regard. That's one of my issues with the No Code/Yield run is that Eddie is inviting you on this journey of self discovery that doesn't discover very much (or, better, doesn't explain it in ways that I find particularly interesting or compelling).

which is odd in a way (or maybe this makes sense) since those two albums, which I think might be his weakest lyrically (those or S/T) are flanked by Vitalogy and Binaural, lyrically what are probably his two strongest.

How on earth is Eddie being empathetic in Black? He’s just whining about his own sadness.
