Re: Sharing Cinematic Values #6: tragabigzanda
I had also never head of "popism" or "poptimism" before this podcast. But according to Wikipedia:
"Poptimism (or popism[1]) is the belief that pop music is as worthy of professional critique and interest as rock music. It is conversely viewed as a variant of rockism, with the main difference being its preference toward the most famous or best-selling pop, hip-hop, and R&B acts."
If that is indeed the case, then I think I do identify as a popist or poptimist.

There is so much content. There are so many choices. And I think that's a good thing.

Also, film might be worse than it's ever been but a large part of that is that TV is better than it's ever been.

Whatever. Everyone hates Bay. I get it.durdencommatyler wrote:Verm, I don't think what you're talking about or responding to is the level of passion in the director or the maker. In fact, I'm 100% sure it isn't.

That wasn't a knock against Bay at all. I like several of Bay's movies.LoathedVermin72 wrote:Whatever. Everyone hates Bay. I see how a movie "bending" a genre means that pure genre isn't valuable.

I'm glad that we have posters here on RM who are so much smarter and understand other film makers stories and influences better than those film makers. Thank god, someone around here is smarter than JJ Abrams.

Neon Demon is so goddamn good. Trag, I hope you'll come back and talk to us about it once you've seen it. And I also hope you make it a priority.

I really don't think Kung Fury is making fun of anything. I firmly believe it is the very heart of passion and respect for genre that you're talking about, LV. To me, it's as genuine and real and passionate as Rambo or Rocky.

Guardians 1 is fun but it's not a great movie.

Hell no. I mean, I wrote a pretty long essay dissecting why that’s not true.durdencommatyler wrote:I really don't think Kung Fury is making fun of anything. There is such an interesting conversation here about genre. Such good points and ideas being tossed out. It's hard for me to equate those ideas/thoughts/concerns with this idea of authenticity, though. I'm having a much harder time wrapping my head around that part of this discussion.

It sure seems to me, if you listen to the director, it is true. I'm probably going to take his word over yours on this one. No offense.LoathedVermin72 wrote:Hell no. "I want to feel the love."
And I absolutely feel the love watching Kung Fury. You don't -- which still kinda blows my mind -- but I do. And a lot of people do. And the maker does. But you're criticism is "truth"? How does that work, exactly?
