Everything else is fine but here's what you do.

Mankind and I'm Open are gone.

Present tense plays....

NOW!!!

The first one minute and thirty seconds of Long Road plays. One verse, and then back to the instrumental, and a fade out...

Into Hard to imagine, into Around the Bend.

There we go.

We've just improved Long Road SO MUCH by making it a little interlude instead of a boring 5 minute song and got to fit it in and make the end of the album really strong and interesting. Essentially Long Road abbreviated, is a better I'm open. And there's something poignant about hearing those first minute and 30 seconds as an individual track. Its like youre taking a little glimpse into Eddie walking the long road, and then you fade away to something else, assuming that he will keep on walking forever.
You seem to have a problem with "Long Road" being "just one chord over and over again", but the version of "Long Road" you're proposing is literally just that chord.
Because one is five minutes and 30 seconds and the other is 1 minute and 30 seconds. As a little interlude Id find it fascinating.

As a near 6 minute concert opener, not so much

No room for Long Road because you can't split up Sometimes and hail hail.

If I had to put Merkinball on No Code and keep it under 14 tracks... I'd do this:

Sometimes
Hail Hail
Who You Are
In My Tree
Smile
Off He Goes
Long Road
Red Mosquito
Lukin
Present Tense
Mankind
I Got Shit
Around the Ben

Pretty much what I've got. Listening to No Code for the first time in a while, and hells, what an astounding first 6 tracks.

I’m baffled by the complaints about the album’s flow, I don’t think there’s a more cohesive and satisfying sequence of songs in the band’s output than the first 2/3 (or so) of No Code. Just a really natural, pleasing mix of tones, energy, ideas, etc.

My only complaint is that Habit and I'm Open are both crap.

I’m with Spenno on this one - still my favourite PJ album to listen to start to finish.

I’ve grown to love Habit after listening to so many live 2000 versions of it for the Definitive Live project

See it happen to a couple of friends
See it happen and the message it sends
Taking off for what's an obvious fall
Just to see what all the fuss is about

Another habit like an unwanted friend
I never thought you, never thought you...
Speaking as a child of the nineties
Never thought you'd habit

Never...never me...never you...never me...
