"Universal Harvester" by John Darnielle is fucking amazing so far. I'm about 80 pages in and I goddamn love it.

Hey I just started Dark!Simple Torture wrote:So "I'll Be Gone in the Dark" was very good, but suffered in similar ways to all posthumous texts--it really petered out by the "end." I can only imagine where her research would've gone in the next few years. Definitely still worth a read if you're into crime stuff.Simple Torture wrote:I'm not into true crime very much at all, but I've heard so many good things about Michele McNamara's "I'll Be Here In The Dark" that I decided to give it a shot. I'm about 1/4 of the way through and it is gripping, terrifying, disgusting, etc. It's great.
Based off a pretty rando Twitter recommendation, I'm going to read "The Manual of Detection" by Jedediah Berry.

I remember a few times when I was reading it before going to bed where I was like, "This was a bad idea."

How 4 groups of bankers (from the UK, France, US, and Germany) made some bad decisions and caused the Great Depression and WWII. Pretty interesting read.

Re: What are you currently reading?
Picked up the 40th Anniversary Hardback edition of Joy Williams' "The Changeling." I've been wanting to read that book for a while now. The new edition is gorgeous, so I figured it was about time. Also grabbed the Greenlight Staff Recommended "When Women Were Birds" which I know nothing about but read the first page and fell for.
THEN when I got home, there was a copy of "Girl on the Train" just sitting there in the lobby for anyone to take. So I took that. It's a book I've been interested in but didn't want to actually pay for. So... perfect.

So many options. I decided to go with "Paris Nocturne" by Patrick Modiano. So far, I goddamn adore it.
