Pearl Jam has seem to have forgotten that they used to achieve urgency and intensity through dynamics and texturing and not just through loudness and pace. They also achieved emotion and intrigue with there ballads using those same properties.

Well put. I don't know if they've forgotten or just moved on. But I agree. There doesn't need to be a divide; it doesn't have to be one or the other.

The biggest problem i have with Backspacer and all the tracks since then is they lack of overall dynamic/mood within the songs. They have all been pretty linear trips from start to finish (with the occasional slight buildup). Sometimes it works for me (Cold Confession but the lyrics and story play into that style of songwriting).

that's a fair critique (although I think FON has a fair degree of movement in it in the sense you're talking about) but it doesn't bother me because most of those songs do not require it either. Really that's my big beef with amongst the waves--that's a song that needed a build and didn't get one

Yeah i think its my overall problem with their songwriting process in general of late. Binaural/Yield are probably my favorite examples where the tone and mood of the song move around the song beyond the volume between the verse and chorus going up. Maybe its as simple them having more of a drastic chord progression shift. I say all that but i'm not necessarily saying its a bad thing to be more consistent or linear through a song, i just think it demands the music and lyrics to work harder to stay interesting.
