"Again, Dada, Again!": The Kids' A&E Thread

[Simple Torture]

I've been watching the Alvin and the Chipmunks movies lately, and I have some notes:

1. Let's start with the clothes: yes, of course, these are cartoon characters, so they've got the Donald-Duck thing going where they wear shirts and no pants. I'm fine with that conceit in general, but: in the first film, the Chipmunks are living in the forest and are obviously naked, and they start wearing clothes when they integrate into society. But in the Squeakquel, we meet tbe Chippettes (the girl Chipmunks) who arrive in Los Angeles by mail and are naked. Because they also came from the woods, right? But in conversation they reveal they came from a small town, which explains why one wears glasses. But then why the hell were they shipped naked? And why are they ok with being naked for for their first 10 minutes in the movie? When the Chippettes eventually do wear clothes, they wear medium length-skirts, which means a studio executive somewhere said, "It's ok to suggest that their Chipmunk penises are just flapping in the breeze, but we need to cover up those Chimpmunk vaginas."

2. In the Squeakquel, Alvin calls the cops because he doesn't want to go to school, but you can see the phone's screen and it's clear that he's dialed a 1-800 number.

3. In The Road Chip, the Chipmunks need to panhandle in order to make enough money to buy bus tickets from Austin, TX to Miami (they actually only make it as far as New Orleans). However, they are international singing sensations who regularly perform at charity concerts that are broadcast around the world--it would be like Bono, the Edge, and one of the other U2 guys needed to beg for cash, but it's never commented upon.

4. Every song in the films are watered-down, Kidz Bop versions of pop or clsssic rock songs. But it's never pointed out that they're covers, which makes me wonder: is part of the conceit that these are original compositions? Do Katy Perry and Beyonce exist in this reality?

5. Finally, nearly every female in these movies--young and old--are drawn to the Chipmunks' inescapable sexual magnetism. For a kids' movie, it's pretty clear at times that they want these tiny rodents to run train on them. The more I watch it, the creepier it gets.

My daughter's current favorite movie is "You Can Tutu," a ballet movie on Netflix. I've seen it probably 6 times now. It is horrific. I believe with all my heart that they hired the adult actors with the intention of making a porno, then lost their permit or whatever and pivoted to a kids dance movie. It's also EXTREMELY racist.
