It was totally unnecessary but tbh I only ever watch the original editions of anh and Jedi.
I know there's a "de-specialized" edition that's in HD, but I don't mind most of the special edition changes since you get the good sound and picture.

Let's talk about how Luke doesn't say his full name until almost an hour and a half into the movie. Did people know it going into the theater for the first time?

They went back and reshot that scene to make it Skywalker. He was starkiller Up to that point.

The climax of the movie moves so quickly; they don't land on Yavin IV until there are like 20 minutes left in the movie. I'm not saying it's a bad thing--even after all these years, my pulse still picks up when they start the trench runs. From the point I started tonight onward, the special edition changes are nowhere near as noticeable. Little things I noticed: I love how dirty C-3PO is by the time they leave the Death Star--dude's been through a lot; there's a certain type of energy that runs through certain scenes in the movie--like when they get saved in the trash compactor, when Luke meets back up with Biggs, when they come back from blowing up the Death Star--that I'd describe as something like "mirthful"...I just really noticed it this time, but the emotion comes across as very genuine, unlike some of the "happy" moments in the other Star Wars films. Hard to explain.

RIP Porkins

That’s the lightning in the bottle of this film. Good takes super careful editing, like they really laboured over the editing and simply not dragging out the ending. It’s paced perfectly. You feel like it should be an entire act, the attack on the Death Star, but it’s a short enough and satisfying punchy exciting ride to climax. It wouldn’t sustain that excitement if it was any longer than it is either.

My son has watched this movie twice this month, and it still cracks me up when Darth Vader's entire response to Han Solo blasting his crew is just "WAT"
(patriotic choking noises)

Someone out there edited the audio of luke saying it’s time for the Jedi to end and that Vader WAT?? Together. I was on a tram and was in fits of laughter. Kept replaying it. Too good.

I will rewatch all the movies again soon, for the TLJ release. Nothing beats the feeling in SW of putting on this movie.

It really is a gem. All the scenes with Alec Guinness. Harrison Ford in his prime. This new galaxy they created.

One of my all time favorite bits. I actually always assumed that's where the internet "wat" response came from. Every time I see someone post, I read it in Vader's voice and assume it's an intentional reference.

Yknow what? All these years it’s the one I watch least. By a long margin.

Since TFA was released I find myself putting it on way way more than the other two.
There’s some kind of weird elusive magic the original film has that the other two have too, but nothing like a new hope. In all the study and reading up on in, especially Rinzlers Making of a new hope book, I come to realise this film has no right to even exist and then Has the audacity to be this brilliant. Everything was against it. Endless catastrophes day to day in filming and production and post production and the business end even more so.

Literally a one in a million shot no pun intended. This film has no right being as good as it is.
Here we are forty years later still treasuring it like no other.

I hope we always revere the OT above all and not get carried away by the Star Wars tidal wave we can see coming for us.

My boy saw this yesterday. It was his first SW film and we made a day of it wearing shirts and then doing SW Lego. He knew a hell of a lot going into it but came out having much more respect for Luke and Obi Wan. He didn’t care much for Han. He loved Chewie so it was good luck I’d gotten him the Chewie MF micromachine Lego to make after the film.

Good day overall and I enjoyed it. I hadn’t seen IV since 97 or so.

That's awesome. I'm already looking forward to doing something similar in a few years. How old is your boy?

He’s 7 in June. He wasn’t phased at all so I’m considering Empire very soon.

Wow. Next time you see an idiot saying Star Wars was a critical smash upon release. Send them this. Jesus some of these reviews are beyond harsh. *one does note this is a film by a kid for kids. May it ever be thus
